The Franklin Mountains in winter

The Franklin Mountains in the fall

The Franklin Mountains are a succession of jagged peaks, as if the earth had sprouted the spiny backbone of a monstrous, petrified beast. Each tip pierces the horizon, creating a chaotic symphony of stone and sky. The mountains are chameleons, altering their attire with the passing of the seasons. In spring, they wear a verdant cloak of blossoming cacti and bright red poppies. Come summer, they bare their rocky heart to the blazing sun. Autumn adorns them with subtle oranges and reds. Winter arrives transforming the mountains into a serene wonderland covered in a blanket of snow. The mountains are a masterpiece of nature’s design, mesmerizing in their majesty. From the shimmering curtain of snowfall at its peak to the delicate dance of butterflies in the Chihuahuan Desert at its feet, the mountains command a silent reverence from all who behold it.
snowflakes gently fall, silent night, peaceful and calm, mountains at Christmas
The Franklin Mountains of Texas are a small range 23 miles long and 3 miles wide extending from El Paso, Texas, north into New Mexico. At the base of the mountains is the massive Chihuahuan Desert that covers parts of northern Mexico and the southwestern United States. It occupies much of far West Texas, the middle to lower Rio Grande Valley near El Paso, Texas, as well as the lower Pecos Valley in New Mexico (Wikipedia.com). For 20+ years, my husband and I taught in a border community outside of El Paso. Our daily commute included a view of the majestic Franklin mountains and their stunning seasonal transformations.

The imagery in your poem is amazing, which you have created with your words.. You took us there with how you wrote this one... excellent prose and a brilliant haiku to accompany it.. That must have been an amazing commute and how great it is to teach in such a place... another for your book dear Sara..

thank you for your visit and supportive comments, Silent One. I'm grateful for your appreciation of both my prose and Haiku...and yes, the commute was amazing. Teaching in a border community was challenging but oh, so, purposeful. Okay, I'll mark this poem as another for my book! Thank you and smiles, Sara

Your coverage of the locale is impressively complete, that I could count every brush in the near chaparral. We passed through El Paso and the widest part of Texas, Ft. Worth, Dallas, and out through Texarkana way. Thanks, Sara, for the mems from your excellent penning. Aloha, William

thanks for stopping by, William, and for your kind comments. I appreciate you using the word 'chaparral. You traveled across the widest part of Texas for sure. We make the trek from El Paso to Dallas many times for we had family in Dallas. Two or three times a year we'd make that trip...such a change of scenery as one travels westward. Wishing you a pleasant evening, Sara

Yes, Tom, we were fortunate to see those mountains everyday...they gave us such perspective, something we needed in teaching along the Texas/Mexico border. Thanks for your visit. Have a splendid Saturday, Sara

Wow that sounds amazing having a view like that for so long and I absolutely love always your haibuns that flow with such exquisite imagery. So many brilliant lines in this like “ The mountains are chameleons, altering their attire with the passing of the seasons“ and then how you’ve described in detail how passing of seasons change their view etc is beyond artistic: i love mountain views. And i just love this haibun, you and your husband have experienced so much together, stay blessed. FAVE

Hello, Sara I so admire someone taking the time to write with such brilliance and explain in such fine detail and finesse about the Franklin mountains how you and hubby drove to work and saw them daily. Living in SF and teaching was a dream, seeing the SF Bay, riding a cable car to school, and all the views! I thought and died and went to heaven!)). A fav on this. It is more than a cut above the rest! Pangie xxxx
