Bay of Angels Premiere Contest Winner

Inspired by Marc Chagall's La Baie des Anges (The Bay of Angels), 1962. Viewing the lithograph will make sense of the poem Blinded by the blue Then I'm outside looking in I raced with the moon To be in the same space as you As the moon abandons it's shadow And I abandon myself Twilight, is daylight, is night Once again The ocean drifts to join you You are held aloft by the reposed breeze I know not if you inhale the scent of those flowers Or if they are the souls of every man who met your gaze And wished it so Guide my path As I venture onwards To be the mist That gathers on your skin To be the air That whispers in your ear To be the light of the moon That bathes you in silver at dusk From sky to ocean As blue fades into blue Painted into forever I offer myself to you 1st Place Brian Strand contest

I haven’t seen the painting but I’m sure it will pale before the surging power of your words, so beautifully crafted, culminating in a rapturous finale. Warmest congratulations on your trophy win in Brian’s contest.

Thank you so much for your kind words! The painting offers more 'felt' than glanced at in my opinion. The colours in it are beautiful and it is otherworldly but somewhat strange. Glad you liked the poem, thank you for taking the time to let me know, much appreciated :)

Congratulations DD. I wasn't aware of the painting but I am now. I think the only Chagall painting I can think of from the top of my head is his self portrait with Seven Fingers and that was only because I remember it from an old South Bank Show TV programme. Thank you. Cheers - Gary

Ahh if only I'd been more tolerant of the dulcet tones of Melvyn Bragg I'd perhaps be a lot more knowledgeable - I discovered Chagall whilst seeking out lithographs to write about. Not sure I'd attempt the 7 fingers one as I haven't got the in-depth religious knowledge to do it justice. Luckily this one was just a poster for the tourist board, so no pressure :)

"I know not if you inhale the scent of those flowers Or if they are the souls of every man who met your gaze"... great question. Hi DD, Enjoyed your poem more than the painting. Congratulations on your trophy win.

Thank you Valsa - the concept of sirens is quite fascinating. The painting is sometimes just the jumping off point into a poem, thank you for your kind words

The sea fret and major tones put me in mind of Picasso 's blue period. Your poem elevates the art piece to new heights (no pun intended). It is not something that I would have searched out on my own, so thank you for sharing this with us. Regards, Suzette

You are very welcome Suzette! I discovered it myself just yesterday and can't believe his work isn't something I'd been aware of before. Thank you for your feedback, it's appreciated:)

Wow, Dilly, what a great interpretation of that lithograph! I really "felt" it more in your poem than in the picutre itself. They say a picture paints a thousand words, but I find words so much more telling. Well done - - John

Thanks John! I wrote this late last night and was planning to check it this morning in case it was just random words that hadn't made sense on reflection. So your feedback is really great to read. This is the first Chagall I've discovered but I really liked the style.

Beautiful poem. I haven't seen the painting but I have full view of it by your wonderful words. Simply Beautiful. To be able to paint with mere words is a rare gift.
