A Matter of Time
Tick tock,
Tick tock,
Grief-stricken
Wondering
When did it all happen
Was it?
Their first smile,
Their first word,
Their first step,
Their first day of school,
His senior year,
Her high school year,
Every milestone
In between,
Their back to me
As they walk away
Each day
Paving their future
Reaching
Toward goals,
Living life
Leaving me behind
Sad, yet wanting to
Be happy and excited
For them
Pasting a smile
On my face,
Heavy-hearted
And so,
The clock strikes
Every second,
Every minute,
Every hour
Of the day
Passing quicker than
I thought possible
Wondering
How much time
Will slip away
Before I’m forgotten
Lost in the void
Just as I’ve done
To my own parents
Very much loved, but
Left behind
In another state
Creating a life
Living,
Moving on,
Doing what’s right
For the family I created.
It’s just
A matter of time
Before my kids do
The same thing, and
Theirs as well
Aching
Memories created
I hold on, still
Not realizing
Much more time
Will pass
Before I’m but
-A memory
