Wonderland Mishap
Wonderland Mishap
Hiking to a mountaintop
In the midst of winter’s chill
When tired, I would camp; stop
Alongside one of many hills
This trail runs a hundred miles
And I was in the middle
Started turning cold awhile
So I stopped to light a kettle
In the mouth of a warm cave
And, watched, as the storm began
My only choice to stay safe
Was staying warm if I can
I built the fire and set in
And, watched as snow piled up
Hoping it wasn’t a bear’s den
Just waited with a coffee cup
Next day I was walled in
Snow packed at the cave mouth
Digging out, trekking again
A frightening night, no doubt
