Whilst the Sun Shines

Draft I bought you a sun hat Taught you to make daisy chains in the sun A thing you'd taught me But the knowledge had gone You asked about my work As you didn't recall If the place that I worked at Was big or was small I got you a dandelion and burdock But the ringpull confused We made light of the moment Misunderstanding excused If we stay on the right lines No one would know So I try to redirect Then it won't show I did try to learn All the right things to say But I sometimes forget too And my patience mislay I looked at you Your still beautiful face Full of good intentions That never take place I wish I could forget The things that prevent Me wanting to be there As I make you content You were ever so grateful For the time that I gave So I try to scrub out my memories Lest path of regret I pave I tell you I'll see you soon Rather than tell you when As I don't always know When I'll be ready again But today we made daisy chains And sat in the sun I did the right thing A good day, done

Deeply engaging poem, full of tender moments, compassion and of course sadness. Draws you into a world that becomes immediate. A well written, disciplined poem DD with so much feeling.

A very moving piece Dilly, I’m guessing your spending a little time with a dementia afflicted parent, your words are simple, poignant, and deeply meaningful, a beautifully crafted poem, cheers David
