My wife and I recently returned to a place we often visited when we first met.

far from the madding roads and cars this green and pleasant land of ours conceals beyond its dry stone walls secret streams and waterfalls where stepping stones dyed green by moss lie half submerged and reach across to distant fields of eighties' skies where grazing sheep still vocalize and move away as we both pass along 'our path' across the grass rekindling memories as it weaves of long lost bonfires burning leaves towards a place called yesterday: 'over the hills - and far away'.

Thanks so much Joanna. It's one of my least read - if the stats are anything to go by - but one I'm particularly fond of. Cheers - Gary

I like this one. I like those unbeaten paths for us who like a little solitude along the way. I enjoyed reading this one. Your visit to my page delighted me. Sara

Thank you Sara. As Ann and I get older and the world gets louder and faster we often turn towards walking through those fields past the secret streams and waterfalls whenever we can. Cheers - Gary

Gary, I love the beautiful pastoral, but my ears (eyes?) perked up about the "80s' skies" "...towards our world of yesterday." Your poems stir memories so beautifully. :)

Thanks Ann. I think it helps that I have a good long term memory (my short term memory isn't so good) and when I write I put myself back in the picture, take a look around and write about all that I see around me. Cheers - Gary

Wonderful, Gary. As a lifelong fisherman, I love the countryside but add water and it’s my paradise. Your poem puts me in mind of many places that I’ve called home, particularly North Yorkshire and right here on the Isle of Wight. Think I might just read it again.... Terry

Thanks Terry. The older I get the more I appreciate the countryside. I love finding freezing cold streams and waterfalls and just watching them flow to wherever. I'm glad you like the poem. Cheers - Gary

Thank you Anne-Lise :) It is but I have to say when we first visited (35 years ago) we managed to run up the very steep hillside next to the waterfall towards the tarn (lake)..it was more of a very very slow walk this time :) Cheers - Gary

It is in the Lake District Tom... Not so secret if you count the thousands of others who must frequent there too :) Cheers - Gary
