Driveway view of snowy home - daylight fades over a snow-covered ...

The trees are thrashing, high winds, snow, and ice. A storm is brewing, and it won’t be nice. A T.V. warning, the power might go out, it’s going to get bad of that there’s no doubt. We watched the weather channel for an hour, then off went the T.V. as we lost power. We lit a few candles, so we’d have light, and went on to bed to sleep through the night. When we both awoke the power was back, we thought everything was on the right track. We looked out the window, we were snowed in, it would be four days until the storm’s end. No water for days the city had said, having no water would mess with my head. We only need, food, water, and a bed, why not go stay in a motel instead? Let’s take a vacation, starting today, we packed up the car and drove half a day, We never thought there’d be no place to stay. We’ll take anything, and double we’ll pay. Panic hit us, Sara started to cry, I couldn’t calm her whatever I’d try. I’ll call my brother while you start to pray, our prayers were answered he said we could stay. It’s hard when you’re older, living alone, and only have family over the phone. But when they were needed, they sure came through, now we know family is not just us two. There is a moral to this long tale, life without others can seem like a hell. Some people won’t help unless you ask, caring for others hidden by their mask.

Nothing.. Nothing like family. Blood always thicker than water, they say. Now we know: It's thicker than snow. Glad to read of a happy ending, my friend. Here's to snowflakes only one at a time! ~ Gershon

Captivating real life write Bill. When we are vulnerable the unbelievable kindness, support, help from others…family ,friends, strangers is the most beautiful part of human nature and it stays with us in our hearts always….restores our sometimes lost faith in humans. I am so glad you and your beautiful Sara were not alone in that terrible scary time! Thankyou for sharing your experience my brudda! Ha! Debx

Thank you for the sweet comment, Deb. It's people like you that give us comfort, even though it's on-line, in our times of need. We are very secluded for the people persons we've been most of our lives. We mostly comfort one another. Smiles ~ Blessing, Sis, your Brudda. Bill :-)

The vivid imagery of the storm brewing, with "high winds, snow, and ice," sets the scene for the unfolding narrative, creating a sense of urgency and foreboding. The poem skillfully portrays the disruption caused by the loss of power and the subsequent struggle to cope with the storm's aftermath. The poem serves as a poignant reflection on the challenges of facing adversity alone and the profound impact of reaching out for support. It reinforces the idea that even in the darkest of times, there is hope to be found in the kindness and compassion of others.

Your message resonates with me my friend. Family comes through in times of need--for those who are fortunate to have the blessings. Others suffer alone. So true to real life, Bill.

My heart goes out to all that suffer through the storms of life alone. Though physically alone, I pray they have the comfort of online friends and the spirit of their creator to sustain them. Thanks for the kind and thoughtful comments, Vijay. Have a pleasant weekend, my dear friend. Bill

Dear Bill, your vibrant poem reveals the awful ordeal you and Sara endured during the snowstorm. The drive to her brother’s house must have been harrowing. Your poem also serves to remind us about the power of family and how in times of need our family can be a great source of warmth, light and comfort. Like Barbra Streisand sings; “people who need people are the luckiest people in the world”. A superb poem. Warmest wishes, my dear poet friend.. ~Susan

Thank you for your kind comments, Susan. They are our closest relatives (54 miles) in distance, but we are not very close as couples. They surprised us with their gracious help in our time of need. I've always loved the Streisand song you mentioned. The words are very true. People who need people are very often humble in nature. Smiles and Blessings, Bill

Thank you for the mindful comments, Daniel. The older or wiser I get, to more I realize the role our minds play in how we perceive the events in our lives, and how traumatic the experiences are. Smiles ~ Blessings, my friend. Bill

You ignited memories of that ice freeze of a snowstorm dubbed "SNOVID" that hit the entire state of Texas. Yes, I'm grateful my brother and his wife said we could stay with them. I'm also grateful that you slowly made the drive...over an hour on icy roads and some black ice. I cried because I was frightened...the notion of staying in our house without power and water was surreal. Enjoyed your poem and the memory, hugs, me

The weather is causing havoc everywhere. Who could have visioned snowing in Texas 10 years ago? It is nice that family members come forward in the times of need. Think of moving to California. Nay, too expensive, eartquakes, rains, fire, global warming.

It actually snows about every year here in my part of North Texas. I don't think global warming is causing the extra snow though. California is too extreme for me ag my age, way too expensive. Have a good weekend, my friend, and thenks for the comment. Bill

Such is as it is, dear Bill. We must accept the human condition, age, apathy included, with understanding, compassion and acceptance.
