My Thoughts on Gratitude
I’m deeply grateful for the love of God;
for family and friends and my good health;
for nature, poetry, my home and church;
for what, to me, is tantamount to wealth.
Beyond these premier blessings, I’ll name some
you might consider weird. Please give deep thought
to each. You might conclude that you agree,
that I have not revealed my soul for naught!
I’m grateful that my pastor doesn’t preach
straight through lunchtime and cause my thoughts to stray
to lemon pepper chicken and chess pie.
Before I’m famished, he says, “Let us pray.”
I’m SO glad my existence doesn’t hinge
on my pronouncing all ingredients
in meds and supplements I take each day.
*Cholecalciferol’s one that makes me wince!
Because mosquitos come at me in droves,
I’m tickled that repellent sprays have Deet.
Those devils look crestfallen-—and I laugh.
They glare at me and slouch off in defeat.
As one who’s ploughed through ditches to avoid
collisions with those menaces who drive
while texting, I say “THANKS” to all of you
safe drivers who want other folks alive!
Last, but not least, I’m thankful for caffeine.
I want it when my feet first hit the floor.
Could I survive sans coffee? I suppose!
Till death, I’d crave that serum I adore.
