The image I've added is only part of the painting, viewing the whole painting will help make sense of the poem. I've cropped it as the rest is nudity that would breach Soup guidelines but it's a fascinating painting

just drink from the cup as the river of oblivion flows some try to stand in stagnant waters others cocooned by the edges seeking a cure from the inevitable I see everything a whole journey crystal clear these seconds of clarity won't last soon I'll join the writhing figures who cling and grab and clutch naked we yield to the robed figure hoping for wombed comfort and reconstitution eyes closed as we cascade to destiny holding onto a last embrace there is peace on the dead breath what lies before the veil of blue recalling is woven in mist thereafter are we willingly numbed until cleansed did I agree to the before before before eyes closed we enter dream world slumber so sweet eager for the first sip of forgetfulness there is no going back no notion of what forward means trembling with loss unretainable scenes flash and fall as rain soaking through skin to bone rain becomes hail bones ground to nothingness the vessel becomes the sands of time that which should have been known only in focus as it slipped away a moment to be the epitome of self as fleeting as a dream then we journey past lives losing parts of selves gaining something intangible treasure beyond worth being is the gift though it slipped through our ungrateful fingers as we lusted for knowing there is no way to go against the river no medicine or cure for this isn't an ailment nor a blessing shed this skin unlock all shackles release the snake's tail the river rushes as it has always done should we omit one drop from the cup of lethe to live with residual memory for what? torment! all purpose would feel empty a snake eating it's tail in an endless loop it is necessary to believe in forward motion ground solid beneath our feet cannot fall through the sky or be burned up in the remnants of a setting sun life equals death, death equals life all rivers join the ocean no intervention can stop the journey the ocean's vastness cannot empty into a vial no cure for ruin of sacred pretty packages we stand in line to receive the gift of medicine the same line leading to the same cup drink up! the alternative isn't worth thinking about

Yup, gifted writing and no, nothing is missing ... there is no specific answer except soul searching - the beauty of this is individual yet all shared!

Thank you IE - I enjoyed writing it although it still feels like it has something missing - the answer to everything would have been nice I suppose! Haha. Thank you for your feedback and taking the time to offer support

Epic writing, DD. As usual, you bring out deep cosmic and visceral sightlines in your ekphrasis poems. Your query/commentary on omitting one drop from the cup of Lethe and residual memory, clever. :)

Thanks John - the concept of why some people are tormented and conscious but not quite enough regarding the unknown I find fascinating - so many angles on it regarding why in relation to soul retaining knowledge or some kind of gap letting other stuff through. Thank you for your always appreciated comments

What is the cost of a sip of forgetfulness? Whatever it is, I'll take a bottle. Now, do you have something for that sweet slumber that would allow me to dream of Klimt's Kiss? I'll drink up, Dilly. Artful writing... no pun intended.

Thanks Lin, I've written about Kiss 2 - 3 times as keep revisiting and seeing something new. I couldn't edit this down, so just posting for now to see how it sits. Thank you for your supportive comment

Since you commented on mine I'll assume it's ok to comment on yours ;). This is epic poetry and quite the commentary on life, pain, inevitably, death. "There is peace on the dead breath." Maybe, but "it is necessary to believe in forward momentum." I, for one, do. Interesting references to Lethe. I referenced it in my poem Rebirth. Great poetry!

I'll presume if you leave something complimentary it's genuine praise (there may be a bee in my bonnet right now) so thank you - I'll check out your poem
