The Carnival of Venice is an annual festival held in Venice, Italy, in February.

Redamancy means reciprocal love

Design format of the Sedoka

  1. It is a syllabic verse and, therefore, contains no rhyme or metre.
  2. It is a traditional Japanese poetic form consisting of two tercets (three-line stanzas/verses). Each tercet follows a specific syllable pattern5-7-7.
  3. Traditionally, the design format included the question in the first verse, and the reply/response in the second verse.
  4. Another possibility – a refrain (according to some resources):The second tercet could repeat the first line of the first tercet as its last line, creating a sense of symmetry and continuity, i.e. a refrain: Abc deA. However, this doesn't make sense to me as the syllable count per these lines does not match: 5 & 7 respectively.
  5. Capitalisation and punctuation marks are the prerogative of the poet, but used sparingly.

Your image captured like a historic death mask. Would it pain you to love me? Like the weeping clown, I hide my true tender heart. I’ll always gladly love thee.

Hi Suzette, this is really beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing. I have never written a Sedoka before, but thought I'd give it a go. I have just joined up and will add some poems soon. Can you please tell me re the Redamancy competition: Does the name have to be just Redamancy, or can the title just have Redamancy in it? Thank you! Ros from Aus

Hi Rosslyn. Welcome to PoetrySoup. The title for the sedoka is Redamancy (and nothing else added). I did mine a bit differently to differentiate it from the contest entries. Regards, Suzette

This is the first Sedoka I've come across Suzette! I had to read it a few times to get the true depth of all you managed to capture in this poetic form. Amazing! I may well attempt, and possibly fail, at attempting this form. All the best, I'll be dreaming of masked love in Venice this evening. - Charlotte

Thank you, Charlotte. As you can see from the winners list in my premiere contest, you are the trophy winner. A well deserved winner that stood out for me when it landed in my entries received box. Regards, Suzette

Love this Sedoka Suzette. It never fails to amaze me just how many different forms there are. I do read your blogs with interest ( some are out of my depth at the moment especially at this early stage of my poetic journey but I hope to take on more challenges one day) These two verses convey so much and are profound. Love the title too - a new word for me. Thank you for sharing your talent and time. Blessings to you.

Some of my blogs were summaries from my books and blogs from my old websites (now closed). 12 years ago (when I started out with this hobby), I thankfully had a sidebar on my laptop where I had to look up every second word. My spelling has improved, now I must just master metre (my Achilles heel). Thank you for your kind comments, Christina. Have a good weekend :)

yes, I know, but I think it's cool when poetry such as free verse or haiku end up with a bit of rhyme. Makes it interesting!

To confirm: Each individual verse doesn't contain rhyme.

'love me' & 'love thee'? No, but it is more an example (unintentional) of remote rhyme. Well spotted, Andrea :)
