paper castle
for once, could you just let the darkness inside
let that cardboard kingdom fall
the turrets buckling under the paper weights
let the oppressor through the gates
passing through and away
leaving us stripped of our dismay
for once, let the paper castle soak up the moat
and when it can no longer stand tall
sink into the earth - carried away by the river
disappearing with one final shiver
as all your defenses are are swept away
and there's nothing left to make you stay
standing alone in the vastness of the night
stripped of make-believe security
gazing around where your citadel once stood
tears and sweat spent that no one understood
a fallen and meaningless monument
lost in the hurricane of self improvement
no more paper battlements
no defenses built around you
you're left vulnerable in the darkness of the night
left to the mercy of its oppressing might
but you find that it's not the darkness you fear
nay, you can rest - for morning is near
