Love? One might consult a dictionary,
For a long, detailed recitation
Of words both fulsome and cautionary,
Words including "fondness" and "flirtation",
Through to ones like "passion" and "obsession",
With examples from the great romances,
Where mutual love is in possession,
And there are so many happy answers.
So many different shades of meaning
For the world's most popular emotion,
Whichever way one's feelings are leaning,
Towards mere desire or true devotion.
To me it is all a bit too absurd,
To me "love is just a four-letter word."*
*Joan Baez song.
