I would like to sincerely thank Line Gauthier for her wonderful reading of this poem following  my request to her on 13th June 2021

Listen to poem:
between the plant pots and the trays the cobwebs had seen better days and for all the wood and damp and soil the smell was one of paint and oil as flies and wasps lying in state were curled up past their fly-by-date and nails and screws and metal hooks shared space on shelves with brewery books beneath a clock with broken hands where time stood still amongst the cans and jam jars full of pip-like seeds stood next to things that no one needs and while her tears had stained the glass that looked out on the unkempt grass upon the floor amid the mess ..a letter and her wedding dress.

Gary, what a delight to find this today in the anthology. I am unfamiliar with Great Expectations, but I found the scene you describe so amazingly of the worn down old home (I liked flies and wasps lying in state curled up past their fly-by-date the most) and the pathos of the ending is such exquisite poetry. Then to come here and discover that you had an audio of Line reciting it was the coup de grace. Congrats for your POTD, the anthology selection, and the brilliant poetry ~ John

Thanks John. I just absolutely adore Line's voice. I could listen to her recite any poems all day long. I liked her interpretation so much that I asked if she could recite a further poem of mine: the recently written " Catch The World" (11th December 2021) - and she wows there too! Cheers - Gary

Thank you Margarita:) It's one of my 3 poems in the new PS anthology. I tried to fit in as many references to Great Expectations' as I could: Pip, her father owned a brewery (hence the brewery books) clock standing still..etc.etc.. Cheers - Gary

My"expectations" grow even more for your prowess with this poem Gary. The clever foreshadowing and rhyming are near on spectacular. Masterful storytelling with Line's voice delicately imagining Amelia's own.

That this poem should garner more reads and comments is a given. As it is truly very fine verse. And the very beautiful voice reading those verses enhance it admirably and with bright and sensually heard tones, emphasis and beauty! God bless...

Wow! Robert, thank you so much for your lovely words. I really appreciate them. This collaboration has taught me so much about poetry. Line's wonderful audio brought my words to life in a way I couldn't achieve alone. At a time when comments and reads appear to have declined across the board at PS, the popularity of this poem continues to surprise me and in so doing makes this hobby of mine all the more worth while. Cheers - Gary

Jan - thank you so much. Yes pip was squeezed into the poem, as was a nod to the brewery her father owned and the clock stopped as it did in the original Great Expectations' text. Again, I cannot thank Line enough. She has a wonderful voice. Thanks again Jan! Cheers - Gary
