I Do Not Like Walt Whitman Much

I just don’t like Walt Whitman much. I’ve said it now. Such heresy! I mean, his stuff’s not bad, as such, but wordy Walt is not for me. He penned some killer lines but still, I don’t enjoy Walt Whitman much. Just say, it Walt, then stop! Don’t fill three pages up with double Dutch! Americans! Condemn me! Clutch your hearts and seize my boorish pen. “She doesn’t like Walt Whitman much? What kind of poet IS she then?” My cousins, you may seethe and tut, but face it. He goes on a touch. Perhaps I’m way too British but... I just don’t like Walt Whitman much. I’ll leave now.

I used to share your sentiments about Whitman and he certainly does overwrite at times; but as an old man myself now I see life differently. Walt could have cut 1/2 of Song of Myself and still we'd get great lines like 'I am the mate and companion of people, all just as immortal and fathomless as myself;they do not know how immortal, but I know.' My life has teased me enough to suspect that he's onto something here.

Nina, I think most of the "great poets" have written a few particularly meaningful pieces but most are just average. Some of Whitman's best poems are actually reasonably short, "Oh Me! Oh Life!", "A Noiseless Patient Spider" and "O Captain! My Captain!" are a few. Their fame I think comes more from the people who keep them alive, not from the greatness of their poetry. I haven't read much of Whitman but like Ilene below said DON'T MESS WITH POE! LOL! I actually like his short stories.

First -- I don't like Whitman much either. Second -- I really like how you framed everything around that title line. Nicely penned, Nina! ~ Gershon

For me, it's Longfellow - he wrote (and I'm quoting from a book about poetry) 'some of the worst poetry in the English language' - just look at the Midnight Ride of Paul Revere' - it's so bad it makes me shudder!
