they look to the meadows near hedgerows for housing using nature's resources in every green space. they grunt when they eat eggs, fish, fruit and mushrooms and then sleep 'forever' curled up in their place. they wander and forage hanging out in the garden taking care of the pests without bother or fuss. they're life's spiny creatures who live for the night-time.. Yes, it's crazy what hedgehogs really think about us!

We have friends who have a family of them who visit for the food they put out each night. I must admit I didn't realise that they moved so quick. Cheers - Gary

I love this! I have a friend at work who is hedgehog crazy. The other day he had a phone call from HM Prison.. they found a hedgehog in the yard and didn't know what to do.. He is a member of a Hegdehog Rescue charity in Warrington, so in essence, he helped brake a hedgehog out of prison. He'll love this poem.

Hi Christopher - I'm glad you like the poem and hope your mate does too. I'm just trying to work out how the hedgehog got into the prison yard in the first place! :) There must be a small hole somewhere :) Thanks for your comments. Cheers - Gary

Gary: They must make good pets. We have at least 4 breeders here in Iowa. Thanks for bringing them to our attention by sharing your work with all of us on the soup. oldbuck

Hi Old buck. I love hedgehogs. As far as I'm aware the European Hedgehog is not for keeping in close captivity but are regarded as welcome visitors to gardens. If you see one during daytime, chances are they are ill. They love catfood! :) I turned the tables in the poem and had them listing what they thought of us humans. :) Cheers - Gary.

Hi Gary: Hedgehogs rate high on the cuteness factor and your poem has portrayed them so well. Glad I popped in for a read. Our equivalent in Australia is the spiny anteater a kind of a rustic cousin. I live in the US now and there are no hedgehogs here. Cheers. SuZ

Thanks David. Your comments are appreciated. I'll be honest and say the thinking behind this one took longer than the actual writing of it. :) Cheers - Gary

Gary, I must apologize to you. I only scrolled down far enough to insert my comment. I can't believe how similar my comment is to Sam's. So it must be true!

Delightful, Gary. I love hedgehogs. You apply the appropriate degree of whimsy to the subject, and make us love hedgehogs even more.

Sam - Thank you so much for the fav. :) I love hedgehogs. I have learnt that If ever you see them during the day it's usually a sign they are ill.Anyone reading this: if you do see them in the daytime they love catfood and milk is bad for them. Thanks again Sam! Cheers - Gary

I love the ending. I read it too quickly but reread it and laughed.
