Atonement

Should I take the dagger that my heart tore
and use it to avenge the pain it caused?
Or should I bow my head and keep in store,
the obsession of life’s dreams once more paused.

I, undeserving of your resentment,
wherefore my words echoed kindness intense,
in past fondness for future‘s atonement
lest it reveal my soul to your pretense.

Foolishly I opened my heart to you,
expecting to relinguish love yet born,
unwittingly my own destruction woo,
to inflict pain through the wrath of love’s scorn.

I cannot feel anger to act in spite,
with a broken heart I bow to your might.

Wow! I often enjoy visiting someone's first post and that was certainly the case with this gem. I related to it and loved the raw passion with which it was delivered. I only today realized that you are a sonnet fan; how lucky are sonnets! A great pen, Teppo, a real feeler. Poetry hugs ... CayCay

Hi T.J, I wanted to see your first post. Let me tell you I'm glad that I did. I told you before that you are really good at writing sonnets. It's one thing to write a good sonnet , this piece flows well and has good content. It makes sense. You captured "a broken heart " very well. If you ever teach a class on how to write a good sonnet, sign me up. Well done my poetic friend. A without doubt seven :-) Alexis

Thank you very much for your kind comments, Alexis. If I could give a rating for a comment, this one would definately get a 7 from me. I may re-post this sonnet in the near future. I've started to change to have proper meter in it. I'll see how it goes once I have time to complete it. T.J

Thank you very much, Debbie. It was lovely to read your granddaughters poem. I would love to see my granddaughters start writing once they get older - they are now 2 years 3 months and 18 months old, and a third girl will be born in June. T.J

When Atonement's fingers reach into one's soul, it shows you can Feel. If you can feel then you can express your feelings. Your Sonnet expresses this wonderfully. (7)

Hi T.J. The Sonnet is one of my favourite forms and when done well it can lift the emotions to such heights. This is an excellent Sonnet T.J. and as this is your first write, at this standard i do look forward to reading more. Now, this is a seven and as a wonderful Sonnet it goes into my faves....Vladislav.

Thank you very much, Keith. I myself consider this as one of my better works - perhaps my own favorite. However, I was silly enought to post this as my first post on PS and it thus went pretty much unnoticed. T.J

Thank you very much. I'm quite excited about Poetry Soup and my new venture in posting my poems as well as getting to know more experienced poets and their work. I started writing poems about three years ago - it kind of all of a sudden opened for me. I became very interested in sonnets and nearly all of the poems I've written are sonnets. Teppo
