A Texas Snow and Ice Storm

The trees are thrashing, high winds, snow, and ice. A storm is brewing, and it won’t be nice. A T.V. warning, the power might go out, it’s going to get bad of that there’s no doubt. We watched the weather channel for an hour, then off went the T.V. as we lost power. We lit a few candles, so we’d have light, and went on to bed to sleep through the night. When we both awoke the power was back, we thought everything was on the right track. We looked out the window, we were snowed in, It would be four days until the storm’s end. No water for days the city had said, Having no water would mess with my head. We only need, food, water, and a bed, why not go stay in a motel instead? Let’s take a vacation, starting today. We packed up the car and drove half a day, We never thought there’d be no place to stay. We’ll take anything, and double we’ll pay. Panic hit us, Sara started to cry, I couldn’t calm her whatever I’d try. I’ll call my brother while you start to pray, Our prayers were answered he said we could stay. It’s hard when you’re older, living alone, and only have family over the phone. But when they were needed, they sure came through, Now we know family is not just us two. There is a moral to this long tale, life without others can seem like a hell. Some people won’t help unless you ask, caring for others hidden by their mask.

Enjoyed your story put to rhyme Bill, especially it's happy ending. There are two times when we want family around, when the chips are down and when everything is going great to help you celebrate, the rest of the time, we must appreciate and never ever under estimate. Best regards, Wendy

I agree, Wendy, it's nice to have someone to be happy with and someone to help when needed. When we get older and don't live near the children or grandchildren, it's easy to feel forgoten and sometimes lonely. Thanks for the visit and comment. I hope we can become friends, I do like your poetry. :-) Bill

I am sure this is a true slice from your life. To live without power is becoming so very hard as we depend on it more than we did in the past. When we are in trouble and feel so helpless, we need others' assistance. "life without others can seem like a hell." This is a thought we have to keep in mind always and be willing to run to others' rescue when needed. A true tale narrated impressively.

We all need to be aware of others, especially those in need and in times of crisis. Not having family near makes everything harder when there is a crisis. Thanks for reading and commenting on my poetry, my dear friend. Smiles ~ Blessings Bill

As this poem so eloquently illustrates, Bill, the connection that families have is irreplaceable. Many people are able to empathize with the position you described in your writing.

All of my children live in others cities, all over an hours drive from us. Families are different now days than the way they were when we were growing up. To me, it's sad at times, but basically I a happy guy and a glass half full type of attitude. Have a great week, my friend. Bill

I sometimes wonder if others encounter these types of situations as they age and find themselves with no family close to where they live. Thanks for your visits and comments my friend, Vijay. Bill

SNOVID 2021--four days of snow and ice blanketed Texas. Subzero temps froze the power grid and stopped the flow of water. Yes, we did panic but in the midst of the crisis we sought the help of family; they were there for us taking us in providing shelter, food, and familial camaraderie. We were the better for the storm. Thanks for capturing that moment in time, dear Bill. Wonderfully said with rhyme no less.

Very nicely done. Without a sense of caring, there can be no sense of community.

Your welcome, Michael. Life brings some unusual challenges at times. Many things in life, I just don't understand. It seems the more I know, the more I realize how little I know, of the whole of life. Thanks for all the comments, my friend.

I hope you don't get a storm. A verse with lots of imagery. Stay at a hotel , they are probably in the same boat. It is true, when alone it makes it very hard. Well said experience.
