'Twas the Night Before Christmas

‘Twas the night before Christmas - the family knocked
on the door, then came in... man, I thought it was locked!
They brought me some décor, they think my house “sparse”,
Cos I desperately tried to cling on to some class,
They brought all the trimmings they thought I’d forget,
Great! Twenty-two things on each plate is no sweat!
They brought the kids candy canes just before bed,
No, you’re right, they’re are NOT hyped enough yet, I said,
They brought Aunty Val - hey no trouble at all!
She can sleep in my bed - I’ll just sleep on this stool!
They brought some opinions I don’t think I sought,
About how to do Christmas NEXT time - “Just a thought!”
And they brought enough cases to last til next year,
They are NOT leaving Boxing Day morning I fear!
But I hugged them and kissed them and welcomed them in,
Cos at least they brought love, and some laughs... and some gin.

Your puckishly witty observations on the idiocyncracies of the extended family, revealed in every line, and the affectionate resolution in the final couplet, put this as number one for me. Well done Nina.

I've heard of boxing day, but please remind me. This is precious, a giggle starter that is delightfully penned and thoroughly enjoyable. All the best ... CayCay

Thank you CayCay - very kind! Boxing Day is 26th December - named I believe because that was the day the servants were allowed home to their families with boxes of gifts and leftovers! I’m much nicer to my servants - I give them Christmas off! ;-)

Ha Ha After a visit like this, the gin is just what was needed to polish off the night. Was laughing out loud while reading your witty write, Nina. Enjoyed very much! Best wishes in the contest. Hugs, Carolyn

G'day Nina … reads like a normal Christmas in our house, except it's beer, not gin, but with the same result I trust - very witty - thank you - Lindsay

Thank you Lindsay! Yes plenty of beer here... and, at Christmas, Bailey’s with a splash of amaretto. YUM.

Luckily, I know what boxing day is! The price of admission at my house is spiced rum, 'cause the holidays do need some adult libations!

Thank you very much Ilene! Aunty Val is fictional and so, unfortunately, is the gin!!

At least the dread of it turned into a good party at the end. Just picture the scene, front door flung open., coats everywhere. The relatives lol. Great write Nina. Tom.

absolutely hilarious Nina! this is one od the many reasons we spend a quiet Christmas, no over eating, no over spending - in fact we spend just £10 on eachother - its 5 years this week since hubby had his cancer surgery - makes you re evaluate what is important. Of course its different when you have young children:-) hugs jan xx

Well, this is actually written as a bit of fond nostalgia really (except Aunty Val - she’s fictional lol!) Christmases are quieter now, and not for good reasons. I admire yours and hubby’s attitude though!
