The Art of Poetry

Blog Posted:11/26/2016 12:55:00 AM

Art comes in many forms. Recently, however, I had a conversation with a few people who adamantly stated that only visual things such has painting and sculpture can be considered art. I found this extremely ignorant and insulting. There are many different forms of art, all of which I enjoy though poetry is my favorite.

I said to these people, "What about music?" They agreed music is art. So, I said what about poetry?" They all claimed poetry is not art. I said, "You can see poetry. You see the words on the page and the painting  in your mind". That shut them up! lol

Poetry is an art. There's an intricate process to poetry writing and every poet has their own unique process. That alone is beautiful. Poetry expresses emotions through the telling of an eloquent story which paints  a vivid picture in the readers' mind.

My point is, poetry is art. You are an artist with something special and beautiful to offer the artistic world and the world in general. Don't ever let anyone tell you different.

Happy writing, my friends!

Side note: If you've read poetry on here by Chris Green and you enjoyed it, he's being featured on my site. I'm looking for other poets to feature. If you're interested in being my next featured poet visit the Featured Poets page on http://www.poeticwritings.com  I really want to inspire and promote other poets.

I love to argue, but there is no real debate here; yes, poetry is art. Sure, there are different aesthetics across different times, groups and disciplines, but this is not to say that we can pry poetry away from all that is art in creation and form. Indeed, those who would engage in such an uprooting can be easily quelled with nothing more than a dictionary. Wherefrom are aesthetics derived, if not emotion and intellect? And what better way to portray beauty, even the beauty that may sometimes be found in ugliness, sadness, fear, etc. - the full range of human emotion - than words themselves? I submit that while there are other ways, there are no necessarily better ways.

Glad to hear you are featuring Chris Green. He is a worthy poet and I will to visit your site sometime. Something weird is going on here today. I can't even open soupmail. Of course poetry is art, but many people are ignorant in this world.

I agree with Brian. Poetry is an art form and it is difficult to see how else it could be described. It stimulates our perceptual senses in exactly the same way as music or visual art. Each reading is a different experience, for the reader and for the listener. The alternative question of course is "what is not art?". Barry.

No question Christy, the apex of our art is reciting aloud to create an'as is ' moment in another's ear.To paraphrase Rothko' a poem read aloud is not about an experience,it is an experience ' And just like looking etc at a painting or sculture or listening to a piece of music the 'the experience' may alter each time as the voice reciting and ear hearing are both living beings.

Yes, and the "hearing" of those voices can have different resonances, depending on what is being read. Our own voice heard allowed would not have the same effect, especially if the first person singular is of the opposite sex.

I agree Julia, some may have the -need- to hear words spoken out loud but how can a poet say-he/she has that need. The images , concepts , heart and message in a poem can be visualized just as easily , if the reader has that capacity-and most do IMHO. I see fantastic images and hear eloquent voices when reading other poet's works!

That's a point of view, but not the only one. Reading a poem on the page is equally superb.
