Afflicted

a random act of violence
testifying to my fear
a despairing silence
screaming in my ear
        evidence of frailty
        with malicious intent
        given by vile destiny
        as the sordid story went
disease lingers in the air
contaminating all beliefs
stealing more than its share
breeding detestable griefs
        an argumentative disaster
        hides just around the bend
each calamity comes a bit faster
        there's never any end
life itself is a question
the answer ever elusive
the cause of all contention
nothing is ever conclusive
        we all struggle to survive
and make the best of things
too few of us ever thrive
but we all hear when the bell rings

Now this was deep and made me think "For whom the bell tolls" when I got to the end. It's all a struggle and so many questions arise, but sometimes finding the answers is what makes it worthwhile...sometimes. Nicely expressed Christy.
