True Thanksgiving

on a single day each year
we all gather around a feast
one day specially to give thanks
but do we remember what got us here?
the brave pilgrims in a new land
         the brave natives defending
         their long cherished sacred territory
how they found a way to join hands
we all know what happened after
but for one day, differences
weren't allowed to divide
and there was thanks and laughter
but they forgot one important thing
         we're all God's people everyday
we each have something special to give
         not only on Thanksgiving
so, let us all do better
than our brave ancestors did
we can give love and thanks
each and everyday of the year
