Trolls on Soup

I was contacted by Heidi Sands this morning about someone posting a vile and filthy comment on a poem she posted yesterday and as well attacked another commenter on the same poem. This person had no name, no avatar and no poetry. How people can become a member of soup without a name is beyond me but it happens. I have seen it a few times. Heidi is not a premium member and is devastated by what has happened so I offered to post a blog for her apologizing to anyone this person may have offended and to assure the members of soup that is was not her and she has no idea who this person is. Sadly this happens, I have seen it more times than I care to remember, so this blog is being written to bring it to your attention and hopefully the attention of the admin here. Heidi has also written to the admin. She also deleted the poem so that no other members of soup could be attacked via her writings. By replying to this blog, you will be replying to her. Thank you for your support in this matter.

I had to check out the blog that inspired Tom's troll song and can say this isn't at all what I expected. Good grief. Heidi is too sweet for someone to use her wonderful poetry as an avenue for filth or ludeness. I hope she reposts the poem - none of us should have to fear sharing our poetry here.

One other question. If this does happen, how is the comment deleted that someone else makes inappropriately without deleting the poem?

TPS has the ability to delete comments, replies, blogs, poems and can terminate an account at any time, Heidi. Depending on the vulgarity or threat level, TPS will either warn the member and remove the offending comment, or boot them right out the door.

I am sorry to hear that you were attacked, and that your Soup chums were attacked, as well. Kooks are everywhere -- in real life and in cyber world. I worry more for the under 17 crowd. The kids who are Soup members. We all should look out for each other.

Is this crap still happening? Soup brings out the best in people, it really does! And it brings out the worst. I think due to several reasons. 1) People open up here and reveal their deepest hurts, regrets, rages, religious and political views, pet peeves, personal Quixotic windmills and hate-ons 2) People recognize themselves in those revelations (whether directed at them or not) and they don't know how to deal with the whole "killing me softly" scenario. So they go into attack mode. 3) They are cheesed off at the world and play Master of Misery here on soup 4) they are just jerks 5) Mental illness 6) Jealousy 7) They misread you and lash out. Shake 'em off! TPS can find them and ban them -- though they come back in different disguises. Some learn their lessons and follow Soup rules. Some (usually those with severe personality disorders) can not seem to help themselves and actually implode on some blog or on someone's poetry page. It's like the hate is bigger than they are and they can't fight its grip on their lives. I've seen it before, here. So, just keep TPS in the loop, block what you can and keep your chin up. There are many more good people here than bad apples. I know you may feel down... but you weren't wrong about this place. It is good. But there is no utopia on this planet. We are all flawed and those flaws are magnified in our art-- poetry.

Though we've been told by the orange troll that climate change is "fake," Canada has experienced some of uber-strange warm winters, of late. I saw a guy wearing shorts this February. However, all bets are off when it comes to Manitoba. :(

HOLY COW! I laughed so hard they could hear me across the street, I swear!!! I'll have to come back. Gotta fly. PS... Trolls within families are not called trolls. They are called siblings. That's what I see in the "noogies" I see below. Sounds like a sleepover. Boys boys, don't make me come up there! hahahaha!

Cyndi, I think that is so, but it's not specific to PoetrySoup - I'd say that the online experience frequently makes us "more of who we are," under the cloak of relative anonymity.

While I'm a bit intrigued - I don't see how the "no name" comments can be done - I also don't think it matters much at all, since any number of named, registered accounts can easily be made, using "throwaway" e-mail addresses. And believe me - I know. Muhahhaahahahaaa.

I had a comment today and it doesn't have any name on it - thankfully it wasn't an abusive comment but I can't understand how these comments can be made without having a soup account.

I agree with the definition that Marti gave. 'Trolls' are people trolling for responses - specifically, negative ones. It doesn't have to be really dire, either - it can just be somebody messing with a friend, pulling their chain a little, so to speak. When it's somebody using "bad words" to try and shock people, make them mad, etc., then it's usually best just to ignore them - don't give them the response they want. You're dealing with a child or somebody with a child-like mind.

Cheers, Heidi - not that there is any necessarily "good" way to go - more that it's a choice among distasteful alternatives sometimes. In the end, I think the real cure is just to get used to it - as bad as that sounds.

Continued: no member on this site should be abused in such a way for no reason and it will NOT be tolerated. Also no arguments should be put forth to my friend Chris. As he was just posting with the blog option that I do not have or I could have done it myself. Thanks again for all the respectful poet's responses. I also just wanted the community to know, that I did not send any replies from my poetry that were vulgar as the person somehow did from my account.

Hi. I want to thank Chris for posting this, as I am not a premier member. I also want to thanks others here, who have commented and shown care about outrageous behavior that should not be allowed at this site. It was an outright paragraph of vulgar language and sending reply to a commenter also with vulgar language. It is good for people to be aware, as it can take off if someone decides to act so hateful without realizing it, if you don't check it. It is the first I have seen at this site.

Come on Ian..The only trolls I build bridges with are the ones from disney ..those trolls witb fluffy coloured hair..that are always happy..and I believe make sad bergens happy.Dont know if you watched the movie :).I do feel sorry that tbere are such people in the world ..who leave insultive comments on otbets..Im not saying constructive critisizm..You know I like that..Jist senseless words..No bridge there dear.x

Thanks for posting this blog Chris...Heidi..We had some of these trolls in the past..I 've seen such trolls even when I once was on another site..Just block them..or ignore them..They leave as they come..Hugs.

Hey, you - I get all that. We somehow miscommunicated, I think. Oh, my friend. I am not apologizing for anything, I wrote this to help out Heidi Sands who is not a premium member and does not have the ability to post a blog. She just wanted to make sure some attention was brought to it and she wanted to apologize if anyone else who commented on her poem who might have been offended by this person. Heidi, don't be suckered into insults, let your heart deceiver what is real and what isn't... Your family here on soup know your quality of work and would never stoop that low.. Like Tim mentioned the person is just wanting attention.. so ignore... I too have gotten a couple of insults I just ignore it I take it as they are just ignorant ?????

I won't. But I hope the site finds a way to stop people from posting without a name, to stop sabotaging of accounts. As it was worse when they used reply button with vulgar language to commenters on the poem as if it was me.

Heidi, Although these type of things happen on the soup, I hate the fact that it does. I am angry and disgusted that such people are able to get away with it. I hope Administration are able to put a handle on it. Chris, thanks for sharing this blog on Heidi's behalf- Alexis

I think that is awful Heidi, I am so sorry. Nicola Byrne wrote about SoupMails from blank accounts, so apparently it is possible to troll here. I honestly hope that Administrators will act on it and that it is possible to stop it once and for all. In the meantime HUGS from me.
