Hi everybody, any ideas on what to do when the brain doesn't want to produce?  I seem to be drying up and I don't like it one bit.  Would like some ideas to light the fire.

This will shock you about my poems I'm sure. When Alfred Hitchcock wanted to work out the details to a mystery, he would collect random items from his house. He then would say to himself, these are the things that make up my story, what do they have to do with a murder. I do the same thing with my poems. Random items become a story.

I get it when I'm determined to write. Just relax and it will happen. From Neil Diamond "If you want to be successful just write something you are passionate about." The beginning of Brooklyn Roads. Sometimes the dry spells are long then a number of ideas will hit you at one time. Good luck. God Bless.

We all go through this at some time or another...and some blocks seem to last a long time, until something sparks the fire . For me, sometimes it is a new contest idea, or a past experience will pop into my head, ... enough inspiration to stir my writing. But blocks are a part of my writing experience, a hurdle I have to jump over now and again.

Some say to write a list of anything and everything that interests you and to pick one at random. I've often tried writing a round robin with a friend helps - they start and then you add a little, then they add some more etc etc.

When you look at the many places, scenery, events in history, the list in theory is endless. Then there is our imagination which is infinitive to thought. Some poets frame in on a short range of subject material, when in fact we are surrounded by choice. It just needs kick started. I personally love to write about many subjects as my site shows www.thehighlanderspoems.com

Hi Elizabeth, you are an amazing poet.Presently I am also having that block. So I am writing haiku only.I think you should not force as Cyndii has commented. You only need a break.

David's got the right idea...that's pretty much how I handle my writer's block...throwing single words down on paper can guide you to more...try the pedal idea it's worth a try...luv shannon

try the flower method, draw a simple flower ie. a circle with five or six petals, in the centre circle write a word, any word,in each petal write two words that relate to the centre word, then add another six petals and keep going, you will be amazed at the amount of ideas you can then get from all of the words, i have often obtained a full poem that way. it is worth a try, hope it helps..David

fall in love, fall outa love, get arrested, go bankrupt, go to the park and yak with the people who hang there, eat a jalepeno or kumquat fresh off the plant it grew on, youtube Bill Hicks, Eddie Izzard and Rush Limbaugh all in one sitting, ask some little kids what their favorite words are... dunno really, my last dry spell lasted four years. Feels like sometimes my poetry wants to be written and others it wants to be lived.

Elizabeth. some of your poetry is so amazing I wonder where it all sprang from! You have an incredible well from which to draw. I will tell you that personally, if it weren't for challenges, I would hardly ever be writing poems. More than 90 percent of my poems are simply based on challenges and I even published a chapbook called "Challenging the Muse" In that book I give lots of examples of ideas to challenge oneself. For example, just choose ten great words from a dictionary and force yourself to make a poem from them. I did many challenges like those in various contests and poetry clubs. Later you can omit the words that didn't fit well into the poem!

PS-- I just recently read where you're from and (Don't laugh) I thought you were from England. Honest, with my imagination, I saw you in a quaint little village where there is a grumpy vicar and little tea shops. Actually, I had this mental picture of you as Kate Winslet in the movie (bad movie except for her)The Holiday. Actually, you ARE lovely, and your picture reminds me of the starlets in the 70's, Jane Fonda or as I'm a former Quebecer, Genevieve Bujold. I know the area you live well. Ahem, do you share a close proximity to a famous painter who specializes in family scenes? ;-) If so, it's my kinda town!

Hi, Hon, one, don't force it. It's like trying to fight insomnia by saying to yourself, "I-must-sleep-I-must-sleep..." Whatever other creative outlets you have, embrace them: baking, photography, doodling, crafts etc, and if you don't have one, try one on for size. Read. Read what you love to read. Then read what you hate to read. Write a letter to a friend, family member, yourself. Allow yourself, when the mood strikes, to write absolute drivel-like-crap with the intent of tossing it in the garbage. Go somewhere, for an hour, a day, a week. Someplace different. Treat yourself to a dinner out and do not order what you normally would, treat your senses to new experiences. In one day overwhelm your senses by careening between extremes- ie a loud pub and then a quiet museum, go to a fabric store and feel silk and satin and then head to the lumber store and smell wood and feel sandpaper. I know this sounds WACKED, but inspiration may tickle you as you explore. Just a few ideas. HUGS!
