"To Be Great is to be Misunderstood"- R.E. Emerson; I'm not so sure...

Blog Posted:10/30/2013 7:58:00 AM

I think that, in order for me to grow as a poet, I need to know and understand just as much about what’s wrong with a poem as much as what’s right with it. Everyone wants glowing reviews and to know they’ve written a good piece, but I (bizarre as it may sound) want to know what doesn’t work within a piece. I get many views on my poems, but get far fewer comments in ratio to the amount of people who have read my work, and I wish I could ask those readers, the ones that read my work but did not give a review, why- what was it about the poem that made you uninterested in leaving a comment or review? Was it too weird or difficult to understand? Did you not identify or
relate to the subject matter? Did you simply not like it?

I have come to the conclusion that my poetry does not have a universal appeal. I write from my Soul, and many of its contents are dark, gloomy, brooding, melancholy and intricate, which are conveyed in my work. Many similar themes repeat throughout my pieces, also: love, anger, pursuit of peace of mind, worry, grief, sorrow, loss of way and confusion, addiction, mental illness and the search for Truth. Perhaps I recycle these ideas too often and they are too present and pervasive. I also have ZERO range as a poet. I primarily write in rhyme, because that is what comes naturally to me and I shy away from all non-rhyme genres because of my aversion to them. Rhyme is the only form that excites my Soul and mind; the only style the stirs and moves me. As I have
stated previously, it seems like non-rhyming styles are more preferred in today’s world and I feel like I would have to abandon my aesthetic and adopt non-rhyming styles in order to be more accepted. I fear I would have to start writing about the majesty of trees and nature or expound about Jesus or write odes to my grandmother in order to have a more universal appeal, which is just not something I have within me to do.

I write organically: the lines and verses are born the way they are born, and they take form and shape in whichever direction they come out. I never sit down and intentionally say to myself, “Now, this piece must contain some blank verse and prose properties”; that’s not the way my creative process works. I’ve had it pointed out to me that some of what I am labeling as “rhyme” actually contains elements of “free-verse” or “blank verse”, etc. and I do not view it that way: technicalities aside, I only look at my work as “rhyme” or “non-rhyme”, because I am a black and white thinker. Before joining The
Soup, I had only heard of a handful of the forms from which we may choose to label our posts. I’ll be the first to admit I am largely ignorant of what truly comprises a “free-verse”, “diminished hexaverse”, “verse” or ”blank verse” poem, nor am I terribly interested in learning in order to be 100% correct with my labels. This may make me a poetic fool, but as Anton LaVey once quipped, “A fool who knows he is a fool is indeed a wise man!”

It’s at times like these when I really begin to second-guess myself; when I truly start questioning my potential- my abilities, capabilities and creativity as a poet. I believe in the depths of my heart and Soul that I am good at what I do and that this is my calling in life: to be a poet, but largely feel so misunderstood as an artist. I honestly wish that my audience, in a polite and constructive way, would tell me just as much about what doesn’t work for them in my pieces as much as what does. So I am taking this opportunity to implore any and all of my readers to let me know why you don’t like something or why something doesn’t work for you; it will help me grow as an artist to know and understand why. I know it sounds like an odd request, but in the long run, I think it will help me. Instead of reading and not commenting, please at least say, “I don’t get this, sorry.”

These lingering feelings of self-doubt are consuming, because I feel like my work is just too odd, archaic, perplexing or intricate for the casual or average reader. Above all, I just want to be successful and accepted, eccentricities and idiosyncrasies included. I hope this post doesn’t come across like some big “pity-party” because that’s not my aim, goal or intention; I’m just airing out my concerns and worry in regard to my artistry
and hoping that people will help me by explaining why they don’t like or enjoy
something I’ve written. Thank you for reading and considering. ~Chan aka JTAP

I hope no one really thinks I am mandating that a comment or review be left every single time a poem is read; that's absurd. I am just asking the readers, if they can or have the time, to also tell me why they didn't like something or why it didn't work, in order for me to grow as an artist. I don't want to become lazy or complacent with praise. If someone did this for me once in a while, it will help, I think. But I certainly don't expect it to happen constantly. I am fine with once in a while if someone has the time or willingness to do so. I fear my words are getting misconstrued. All I want is to be good or the best at what I do, and I think this would help, that's all. Thanks :)

i think we all have many reads but not many comments to reflect the amount of reads..most everyone has a particular form that they handle best, some rhyme most, others very little, but as writers i think most of us write from out hearts or souls..i know i do and i do not sit down and say hey today i am going to write about this...my muse pretty much leads...sometimes a contest or topic may inspire me, other times it wont...i still write though, for me, for the love of poetry and to share my words...i am fairly new here and don't know everyone, i read as time allows and comment on most pieces i do read!

I'm not very comfortable publicly critiquing work; probably the only time I would do that is if someone specifically asked me to; otherwise I err on the side of caution and tact...I'm not even sure that a site such as this is the right place for serious criticism - too many feelings can get hurt and too many friendships can be jeopardized...if people want serious criticism they can send their work out to editors or attend a workshop, but on this particular site I think the emphasis should be on friendship, support and encouragement...

I understand your point, Charlotte, but I am just imploring people to do this because I want to grow as an artist and not become complacent with praise. Knowing why something doesn't work will help me grow. If people are more comfortable critiquing via SoupMail, that's fine, also
Date: 10/30/2013 5:12:00 PM
I must say you write some thought provoking blogs! I read a large number of poems on this site, but I only comment on a fraction of them, mainly due to time limitation - if I were to comment on everything I read I would never be away from the place! and if I'm totally honest, like most people here I tend to comment mainly on people who comment on me and people I am friends with...I don't believe any poetry has universal appeal; you will never please everybody, no matter how good your writing is, and the sooner a writer realizes and accepts that the easier his/her soul will rest...

I hope you guys understand that I didn't mean I want or expect every single person who reads one of my poems to reply; it would just be nice to know why something didn't work for someone, that's all. I don't want to become complacent with just praise, if that makes sense

Cont..there was a bible of forms i could fall in love with .T he more time passed. the more i was willing to learn ..and I will never stop my urge to learn..I guess its what makes us wise in what we love doing in the end.Yes all i knew was to rhyme..and it wasn t even so good yet with loving help from my friends I am a step closer to better..still far way to go to be at my best..but its oku..One step at a time.Re constructive critiszm..we usually share it in soupmail.Re views..I guess everyone has mre views than comments received

I dnt feel that s negative.Sometimes i read more than one poem of the same person but comments only on one or two so i have time to comment on others posts as well.I do think that at least if someone didn t leave a comment but he she read it..Of course i prefer if i sa his her feedback in comments but its still better than being ignored.Re your poems..I like your poems..Just relax and enjoy.Do not worry too much..We can never have it or do it all in life.Re your title..I don t think i would want to be gr8..Great people doesnt always live a happy life..They have lots of pressure.I do believe the humble poet is always better than the gr8 and usually the one who is cherished and remembered.Keep writin..keep being you : )

When I joined poetrysoup all I wanted was to write poems..or what i believed where poems.I lacked so much knowledge about many forms yet I was interested and willing to learn. In my first months here I used to type what I feel in my heart and soul directly on pc with no revision of my verse.Nowadays i still scribble my momentary thoughts wherever they occur ..but before posting t online I see what I can add,.erase or adjust. There are some times where i sit down and i say i am going to write about this topic yet i do believe my spontanious inspired poems give me better results. When i joined here all i wrote where mostly rhyme poems till i started to find out

I don't want anyone to think I rest on my laurels and believe everything I write is good or perfect. I write my fair share of poetic duds and I make revisions all the time. I understand what you mean though, Charm :)

I enjoyed your poetic thesis. You are a brilliant writer. I am a little intimidated by your consistency and tenacity. Reading your work makes me feel like I am all over the place, without structure...sometimes. I like the fact that you write what you write because it comes from your Soul. To that, I can relate. I am one who receives inspiration from pictures that just randomly appear in my mind and then I try to describe the pictures by writing them down. A write pages and pages of free writing, like a mad woman, in hopes that something will develop.

I can understand that. Sometimes I have told a poet I can't explain why I like a piece' that I just do. I only want to be the best at what I do, and fear to hear only praise will make me a lazy, complacent writer, if that makes sense <3

Also, Sometimes we are unable to verbalize why we like or do not like something.Today I received an email from someone to let me know they read and liked one of my poems, but they didn't leave a comment on the poem.

I am in no way calling anyone out nor is this meant to be controversial whatsoever; I hope no one takes that away from this blog post. Again, this is not about anyone in particular nor am I trying to start a fight or argument in any way, shape, fashion or form. I hope that's understood; sincerely.

I do make comments; I make many comments every single day. Today alone I have reviewed I don't even know how many poems, but I review rhyming poems, as they are my preference.
