About Andrea Dietrich

Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held).  A song was created from her lyrics "Honeymoon Serenade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDWxc4cpHDc) and two movies have been made featuring the poetry of Andrea Dietrich: "A Tale of Fire and Ice" (a 4 min. Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. Perry, 2019) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7710360/

SO BEAUTIFUL - For the Love of October Etheree Contest Judged

Blog Posted:10/1/2015 1:41:00 AM

Hi, guys. All your poems were so wonderful, I decided to give everyone a win! Somehow three managed to sneak in after the 35 cutoff, so that is why I have 37 winners. One person did a long free verse that was nothing like etheree, so that one was eliminated. The HM misunderstood the meaning of etheree and used WORD count instead of syllable count, and I wish someone had told this person the mistake, but I decided to include that poem on my list because it is still a very nice poem!

Amazingly, unless I messed up and did not see it, EVERYONE on my list followed two of my most basic rules, to put Etheree in the title heading and include date of the poem. At least seven people were off on their syllable count. However, I also used four different criteria in my judging. That is how a poem with a wong syllable count was able to sometimes score higher than others. It meant that the person's poem, for me, had better than average imagery and/or structure to it despite the wrong syllable count.

Speaking of syllable count, I am VERY disappointed in the syllable counters being used online. There were two poems with syllable counts I still do not even agree with, but because I was able to find online counters that counted their lines as correct for number of syllables, I had to give them full points for syllable counts that I disagreed with. Anyway, it might look like some people had too many or too few syllables for an etheree, but the silly counters sometimes said otherwise. Hardly anybody was way off base, so I decided not to eliminate based on syllable count! (Next time I will have to find the perfect syllable counter online and make sure everyone uses it. Then I can eliminate based on syllable count).

Thanks for your participatioin and CONGRATS to ALL THE WINNERS in my contest.

For Love of October

Andrea, thanks for placing my etheree in your contest even though my syllable count was off. After checking the PS syllable counter, I heeded your warning that it may be off so I also checked another for back up. Both counters gave me two syllables for the word 'oranges'. Maybe, we need one reliable counter we can all use as the authority. Thanks again for my placement. : ) Janece

Hi, Andrea....I got a notification that you answered my comment so I had a read of some of the other comments. What you and Cas discussed intrigued me. It's good you were lenient with the syllable count concerning diphthongs. That is when lenience much be shown because it can go either way. Here is a quote: "For "oil" and "choir", it really can go either way... you can make arguments on either side. It depends on whether you pronounce these words with a schwa sound ("uh"). If you pronounce "oil" as "oi-ull" and choir as "kwai-urr", then they're two syllables." Thought I'd share....Hugs

Yes, the OY dipthong is so weird. I actually hear two syllables when I say it and yet normally dictionaries just count it as one, so I make a practice not to use it as one syllable in all my writings where syllable count is necessary!

Laura, I got an owl poem from Shadow! but not from you. so sorry. Sometimes there are glitches and sometimes I know i have believed I entered a contest, when in reality it never went through!!

some truly beautiful etherees; the standard in this contest was very high...thanks so much for my placement, i didn't think you'd place it as, strictly speaking, etherees are not supposed to rhyme, but i chanced it anyway! congrats to all the winners! :)

Charlotte, I have written many etheree, and frankly, I kind of like rhyming them from time to time! If modern sonnet writers can stop rhyming sonnets, why the heck can't modern etheree poets use rhyme? haha

Hey, guys, my number one winner, Ronald Zammit, just told me thanks for the birthday present. Go say happy birthday to him!! I think he dis a fantastic poem for me and it is a TRUE story!!

I know there are so many words like -orange, desire, owl-that change syllable count based on pronunciation. From what I have read already you have hosted an inspirational contest, thank you. And a smiley grats to all the winners!

Ha...must be in michigan we don't pronounce orange right, I asked around and no one pronounces the a...curious. ornge...but we also say pop instead of soda...most of the time I just stay away from the words I doubt the syllable counts for...sure makes it interesting, should find a sight that counts properly and does a verbal demonstration

I don't think there can ever be anything other than two syllables for Or/Ange. /but I can understand the confusion with owl and desire. it's one of those things that I had to learn about myself, that the long vowel sounds OW, OY, etc are considered one sound. glad you found the contest inspirational. I was very pleased with the results.
