Below is the poem of the day entitled Pledge Of Eternal Love which was written by poet Nicola Byrne.

Pledge Of Eternal Love

As I beseeched the stars above that night:
  “Pray tell me where this God of yours doth dwell,”
Your beauty evanesced by raging light;
    Most precious love beheld mephitic hell.

With fulminating tears, my heart decreed
    Apologies, that I could not reclaim
The fulgent energy that you would bleed,
    Through nimbleness of an exquisite frame.

Must I endure the slaughter of your life,
    Delivered by the savagery of man;
Or pierce my soul with this serrated knife?
    For breathing without you, I will not plan.

My heart, I swear, that I did merge with thine
Will never love, nor star again will shine.

    What I think of as "real" poetry, and I'm in over my head.

  1. Date: 9/30/2016 9:14:00 AM

    Whew! Had to look up a few words but I really like this nicola. It's near perfect, but if it were me I would change the "I will not plan" in verse 12 to "was not the plan" and eliminate the comma. And in verse 13 I would change the "I" to "once" . But of course that's just my opinion. I really think you did a wonderful job with this sonnet.

    Hi Nicola, just dropping by once more with my congratulations on your poem of the day, an accolade well deserved. I loved the older style and content of this sonnet. It just flowed straight into the soul. BRAVO!!!!!! Deserving of another seven, most definitely. Hugs....Mike. XX

    Hi Nicola, this is indeed a first rate Sonnet. You have let your heart sing and such a wonderful vision you create. I lose myself in the words that teach deep the soul of this reader. I do like the older style very much. I am an old fashioned guy and I like the older poetry. Your heart has sung in this write and how. Always write from the heart Nicola, you do it so well. This has to be a seven and a fav. Hugs....Mike. XX

    This is some pledge, Nicola. I've often wondered. Is there such a love? I can't possibly imagine that feeling, except maybe for the love of a child. I have never experienced such a devotion. Great sonnet!!

    Quite a classic of a sonnet. So well done.
