Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held).  A song was created from her lyrics "Honeymoon Serenade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDWxc4cpHDc) and two movies have been made featuring the poetry of Andrea Dietrich: "A Tale of Fire and Ice" (a 4 min. Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. Perry, 2019) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7710360/

I am Shocked and Greatly Saddened: My Dear Friend Connie M. Passed Away

Blog Posted:9/13/2022 1:12:00 PM

Just now, Connie Marcum-Wong's daughter Jennifer found me on FB and wanted me to let PoetrySoup know that her dear mother died last night at about 11 p.m Hawaii time. At first I could not believe it because I had sent her a link to some information she considered very important and I got her reply email this morning with the time marked 11:03 pm. Since Hawaii is four hours behind my time, she must have answered my email around 6 p.m her time and suffered her massive heart attack four hours later.

I feel so sad because I have now lost the friend in poetry whom I have known the longest and with whom I have been the closest in a span of some 20 years or more. Just yesterday I got my birthday gift she sent me! She always gave the sweetest gifts for birthdays and Christmas. Also, she sponsored a poetry club which used to honor many of its members with certificates that she printed out and sent through the mail. She was so gracious, and she truly loved poetry and being a support to the poetry community. Connie was the most generous loving soul I know in the poetry world, and she was giving me so much exciting news about her life recently and her desire to publish a poetry book, something she had been putting off for a long time. OH MY, I can hardly believe she is gone from this world.

Her daughter wants you all to know that Connie was missing her late husband Mike, who passed away already. As soon as I get information on her obituary, I will let everyone know. Jennifer also wants me to show this poem of Connie's that shows Connie's  lingering longing for her husband. It was written just last month. I am not able to copy/paste it in a way to do it justice. Please go to the poem and read what she wrote in the last days of her life. Maybe you can leave notes there for her. I am sure she can read them from heaven. My condolences to the family members that have survived her. LOVE YOU, CONNIE. You were, and you ARE a one of a kind!

Greetings Andrea, I appreciate how you and the many others, including Connie, spread the Aloha here. This site went from a seed, to taking root, to blossoming into a beautiful tree that it is today much to the community builders like yourself and Connie. I read Connie's first listed poem, here, back in 2010. It was a few days into the New Year and Connie wrote a poem titled New Year, Past Years. It was a great poem. And you were the very first respondent, offering warmth, welcoming and encouragement. You were there for Connie then as you are here for Connie now. It was truly heartbreaking to read of Connie's passing but it also heartwarming to read your reflections and love for Connie.

Andrea, thank you so much for letting us know about Connie's passing. I am in shock. It happened so quickly. Like you, I was blessed to be called friend and to share many conversations. Her poetry was a gift to the world - an amazing legacy. With all of her health problems, and the stress of her mounting loses, we were indeed blessed to have her gentle soul with us as long as we did. Godspeed dear Connie!

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Connie. Connie was so sweet, supportive and encouraging to me and so many other here on PS. I loved her poetry, and her beautiful words will live on in our hearts. I kept her in my prayers when her husband passed away a few years ago, and with other family health issues. May God gather her into His arms in heaven. Will pray for her daughter and family as they deal with this sudden loss.

Hi Andrea, I, too, am saddened by Connie’s passing. I have not been active in the soup as much as I used to be, however, Team Poetry Soup emailed me the tribute piece in honor of her. I never met her in person, but I felt like I knew her. I cried when I read that she passed; I will miss her presence on the Soup tremendously. She is now reunited with her dear husband. I send my condolences to her family and friends-Alexis

thanks, Dale. She had blogged a while back about a heart problem but I was hearing nothing else about it from her and I am as shocked as you are that it was her demise. She had other things that made life difficult, so as much as I will miss her, I am glad she can enjoy bliss and the end of pain
Date: 9/14/2022 2:02:00 PM
I am in total disbelief...Connie had suffered so many horrific losses recently. The one ray of light in all of this is that she is now with her loved ones who recently left before her. I admired and loved her dearly. I will continue too, and will never forget her, her wonderful kind spirit and beautiful poetry.

It is with a heavy heart to have learned of such a loss. This was such sad news, and her light will be missed sorely. At the beginning of my Poetry Soup journey, she was one of my dearest friends here, and always had an encouraging word, a kind remark to brighten the day. Connie and I often shared family news, and a commonality that I will miss. Her gracious generosity, and lack of ego defined a lovely friend. God Bless her loved ones

Dear Andrea: This news is so unbelievably sad and I feel devastated by it. Connie was the reason I grew as a poet because of her encouragement at Poetryforthought for many years, but due to my own hubby’s health problems I had stopped posting there however we stayed in touch here and I sent her a special card when Mike died. She loved her family very much. My heartfelt condolences to them all. She is with her dear husband now right where she wanted be. You will be greatly missed dear friend. Loving sympathy. Suzanne.

We shared family news and comforted one another when the need arose. She will be dearly missed, so will her positive and kind character. She loved poetry... You are so kind and I am glad I got to meet you in person. I always kind of thought maybe one day I would meet connie in person. then the pandemic came and there was no way I'd go to Hawaii with those mandates they had on people. Connie hated the mandates. I feel like she and I agreed on so many things. Will really miss that.

My prayer are with you, her family, and the others here that have known her for years. She has been such a blessing to my life over the last 11 months that I've followed her poetry and she's followed mine. A wonerful poetess and helpful and encouraging friend to me. I went back and read her poem again and others over the last few months she wrote. It's hard to believe this news. I can't imagine what you're thinking and feeling right now my dear friend. Andrea, I know how much Connie meant to you and how hard this news has been on you. We share your grief. Connie was very special, wasn't she? She touched us with her beautiful poetry, her love of nature, her friendly comments... knowing Connie liked our poems felt better than a contest win or POTD. She had this way of making each person feel special and loved. She went through so much suffering and loss in the last two years but never lost her faith or optimism or love of life. So gracious and SO inspiring. She will leave an empty place in my heart. Thank you for sharing this sad but important news, dear friend. Hugs ~ John

Oh My.... ! It is such an awful news.... so heart shattering . She has been so active till recently after a stint of hospital stay for a few days. Her sweet presence and her lovely poems, we will all miss. I don't generally read blogs. Seeing Michael Tor's poem on Connie, which I didn't read, I knew some sad news was awaiting and hurried to the blog expecting to hear more. Her smiling face is before me. Recently she has been very happy with her grand children.Express my heartfelt condolences to her dear ones and every member of the Soup family. Andrea, I know how grieved you are, as you were more close to her than any of us. Sending prayers for the repose of her soul.

Dear Andrea I was so saddened to hear of dear Connie's passing, what a dreadful shock. She was always so generous with her lovely and inspiring comments and I will miss her kindly soul. God bless her dear heart - she will be so sadly missed by all at Poetry Soup, but her poetry will live on... now together with her true love. With kindest thoughts Ann xx

Oh my, am so saddened by this news Andrea... I just can't imagine she has left us all because it was most unexpected... I have read her comments to poems even last week and can't think that she is no more... She was such a beautiful soul, so kind to everyone... She used to be so generous in giving her genuine comments to poets in Soup. I know what a great friend you are to her. My sincere prayers and condolences to her family. I will leave my comment in the above mentioned poem and as you said, am sure she will read it from Above... May her soul rest in peace! ~ Ani

thanks so much, Ani. You are like my little sister to me and I appreciate all the kindness you show to others, same as Connie did.

Dearest Connie, you loved speaking different languages, Mandarin your beloved husband's, you even wrote a poem in French, I'll always remember “The Mother Tree” a trophy win. Your last reply to my poem "How the master poets still inspire us Anaya." You were always graceful and elegant; She was a master poet. I will miss her comments and presence here on Poetry Soup…Rest In Peace. ~With love, Anaya.....I am so sorry Andrea

Andrea I am so terribly sad to hear this. I am in complete shock! We have lost a Dear friend that was more than a friend but was an angel here on the Soup. Her kindness and love was felt by everyone that knew her. She went through so much losing her beloved husband, and stepson, and then dealing with her illness. She loved writing and sharing her thoughts and she was an exceptional writer. To know her was to love her. Andrea I know you were a Dear friend to her I want say I am so sorry you have lost an Angel friend. We are all going to have her on our minds. She will never be forgotten and will live in the hearts of those that were fortunate enough to know her. She is with her husband now...

Michael, you are spot on, we have lost a dear friend and an angel. She suffered so much yet her optimism and faith remained intact and was an inspiration to us all. Thank you for your thoughtful words here and for your tribute poem. Our earthly loss is her heavenly gain ~ John

Your thoughts on her are mine exactly, Michael. She spoke very well of you and was glad to have your friendship. She is with her husband... YES!
Date: 9/13/2022 7:25:00 PM
Dear Andrea, my heart is sadden by this news. Even though I didn't know Connie like so many of you, her presence here has made an impact on me, simply through her kindness and compassion. I'm keeping her family in my thoughts and prayers, in their time of loss. She will be missed, but not forgotten. Hugs, Brandy
