About Andrea Dietrich

Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held).  A song was created from her lyrics "Honeymoon Serenade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDWxc4cpHDc) and two movies have been made featuring the poetry of Andrea Dietrich: "A Tale of Fire and Ice" (a 4 min. Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. Perry, 2019) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7710360/

My Traditional Easter Tradition. Tell me Yours!

Blog Posted:3/25/2016 7:31:00 PM

Hi, guys. I don't really do much at Easter time since the kids are grown. I no longer color eggs or hide them. But for my adult students of ESL, I make Easter Egg nests. They are SO easy and delicious.

Here is all you have to do (to make about 8-15 nests (depending on how big you want them):  Take a bag of chocolate chips (or you can use butterscotch chips) and melt them in a dish in the microwave.Takes only two min  or so. Stir the chocolates with a bag of crisp chow mein noodles (they resemble small sticks and are sold by Chinese food in the grocery store). I'd say at least 8 oz of these to every 10 or 12 oz. of chips. Use your judgement. You can substitute  the chow mein noodles for shredded coconut and chopped nuts or any kind of cereal such as rice crispies or cheerios.

Once you have your noodles and chocolate mixed together, just take a dollop of the mixture and form it into a nest, as small or big as you like, making sure to leave an indentation in the middle where you can put the jelly beans. I put them on waxed paper because when they set and harden, they can get broken if you try to pry them off a plate. Also I find it helpful to keep my hands buttered or keep dipping my hands in cold water to make it easy to form the nests!

Decorate them with any kind of small candy eggs. I also like to put jelly rabbits or small chicks in the nests. I color coconut green to be the grass the eggs are sitting on top of.

Here are some pictures what you can make them look like. Just google easter nest images to see many other kinds! Do you have any special meals or treats on Easter weekend? This is MY special tradition.

HAPPY EASTER!!!

On good friday, many maltesers attend an Easter street pageant. ..of the passion of the Christ. .Afterwards many watch a maltese program where donations are made to help those who are sick with cancer, and need financial help.. On Thursday We make the seven visits in different churches,. THATS ALL DEAR
Date: 3/27/2016 3:38:00 PM
Thanks for the lovely idea sweet Andrea. In malta the tradition is the maltese figolla..Its made of sweet pastry, filled with pure ground almonds, covered with chocolate or icing... It usually has an animal shape, during the years many different shapes evolved, but in earlier times it was that of the lamb. This year on Easter day Im eating Eileen 's baklava , delicious !: )

The hot cross bun tradition started apparently to celebrate the end of lent in many English speaking countries, (I guess the 'puritan fathers' did not take it with them across the 'pond')

:) Canada LOVES hot cross buns and we had ours this morning! However, since we are a commonwealth, it isn't that surprising. Happy Easter!

I heard of them in the nursery rhyme, Brian. But no, I do not know many who practice this tradition from across the pond. Thanks for commenting at my blog!
Date: 3/26/2016 10:18:00 PM
Our long local tradition here in England Andrea is more related to eating hot cross buns, which remind us of Jesus sacrifice on the cross. In the past few years (as the UK becomes increasingly secular) our church has sung Easter hymns at the local shopping mall to celebrate Jesus resurrection.

From when he was about 5 I used to use a mould to make my son a plain chocolate Easter egg. It took about 200gr choc so was really thick and I'd fill it with mini eggs and choc bunnies etc ... but since he's been at University and has not come home for Easter this year the tradition has now gone:-(hugs Jan xx

He adored it as he loved plain chocolate rather than milk and to make it was SO much cheaper than buying and he used to look forward to it so much and I had fun making it for him:-) hugs jan xx

Looks like so much fun, Andrea! Me n' Ma went to Liturgy of the Passion today at noon at her church, it was wonderful... (we are Catholic) no one else observes with us, thats cool, we have Muslims, Jews, Protestants & Non-Believers in my family, all love each other! My daughter from Chicago is here this weekend, I' m taking her to a play tomorrow nite of Amiri Baraka's "The Dutchman" (intense!) Then brunch with both Daughters & Ma Sunday!
