Centering & Italics for Dummies (that included me too at one time!!!) - Andrea Dietrich's Blog

About Andrea Dietrich

Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held).  A song was created from her lyrics "Honeymoon Serenade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDWxc4cpHDc) and two movies have been made featuring the poetry of Andrea Dietrich: "A Tale of Fire and Ice" (a 4 min. Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. Perry, 2019) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7710360/

Centering & Italics for Dummies (that included me too at one time!!!)

Blog Posted:6/3/2014 8:00:00 PM

This blog is to inform members who have never been able to figure out how to center and use italics or bold print when submitting their poetry. I hope it will be useful. The reason I want to post this is because I am doing a contest right now asking for centered poetry and also I noticed another judge or two asking the same. Furthermore, I believe there are quite a few poets who do not understand how to do these things. It took me a long while to learn it myself. When I started asking about it, someone finally told me the secret. The answer was right under my nose; however, I was confused by other little things that prevented me for some time from trying it out.

A poet here at Soup has recently asked me how he may center his poem. I told him that all he had to do was to check “Poem Text” feature right above the box where we post our poems. Even then, he had many questions about it. I think it is because he and I and others at Soup are from a generation that did not grow up with computers. So we are afraid to try things that seem so easy for others. This is the reason I suggested in my previous blog that Soup should have a tutorial for people. Many of us are older poets who are not savvy like the new young poets. Also, some young poets here do not know how to do this kind of thing either. So this is for old and young alike.

If following the instructions by “Poem Text” still perplexes you, here is a list of questions I was given by my friend who wanted to know how to center poems and use italics. I went through his list answering “yes” or “no” to each question. If you STILL can't get it, ask me for my EMAIL in Soupmail. I cannot give proper instructions either here or in a Soupmail because using the actual Poem text symbols anywhere on site except inside that submission box will cause an ERROR page to come up. So it's impossible to spell it out for you in a blog.

He said: I want to know if I should:

1. Put the "center" tag at the beginning and end of my poem. The end tag has a / in it.- Yes

2. Then click update. - Yes

3 After I click update will the tags disappear? - Of course

4. If not will I have to remove them them and click update again? - No

5. Do I put any spaces between the end tag? - NO

6. Do I just type in the tags myself? - Yes

7. Does the centering take effect immediately after I click update? - Yes

8. Do I put the beginning tag close to the margin on the left.? -- Put it Immediately in front of your poem even though the poem will be over more to the right . It will look strange, but it will all center out.

9. Are there any periods before or after the tags ?-- No

10. Is there a space between the first tag and the first letter and last tag and last letter? - No

One last thing. Let's say you want to do BOTH italics AND centering. You don't put any spaces between them. You just do the symbols for both items at the front and the end of the poem. If you want EVERYTHING centered, even your name, and date, etc, then put the symbol at the end of your last line, whatever it is inside the text. Hope this helps!!!

Deb, it's just the little note I put at the bottom of my poem. It's right there at the poem!! Maybe I will do a blog. I'll wait till after the contest though if I do that
Date: 6/4/2014 2:54:00 PM
Someone just soupmailed me an unusual question and I hope I understood them and answered them right. they wanted to know how to click "update" the first time centering the poem. well, if you center the first time you submit, of course you will not be updating. You just post the poem as usual after doing the centering stuff!!

I was a dummy for a long time before I realized how to center my poems.I'm sure many will benefit from this.I' m still a dummy re adding photos or pics in blogs.I remember when it was the old fashioned way..I did upload a photo in a blog when I was a member about three yrs ago..But it seems the system.changed and Im very basic when it comes to modern technology.: ).Trying to catch up again dear.

so good to see you here, Charma. You are the kind of poet that makes this such a special site. I am still struggling with pictures and such. I managed to create one on a blog but didn't know how to get it "situated" how I wanted it on the page.
Date: 6/4/2014 12:47:00 PM
It took me 3 years to figure it out... I finally ask my Hubby to help. He showed me in 3 minutes... Getting the pictures in blogs still requires my Hubby's help! (Yes, it took even longer... LOL)
