Tenacious Ink

With tenacious ink,
we have retold half the story,
proud in our heels and army boots
and all our diverse glory.
But the chapters ahead...
they will take us to darker places
where women are still shame-wrapped, blame-slapped
or afraid to show their faces,
uneducated, callously mutilated
or obliterated by needless diseases still running rife...
because a condom’s the price
of a life.

And so, with feathers preened
and inkwells filled...
we write on.

See my poem, "The Gentleman" on Feb. 25. If men had been and would just be REAL gentlemen --- no Weinsteins, Clintons, Trumps, Lauers, Krafts, and all the myriad unnamed who took and take advantage--- then and only then would you, could you, take off the boots, Nina. Otherwise, keep right on marching, I say! Nicely penned, by the way. :) gw

I am so glad that your talented muse has a 'feel' towards this topic's wrongness for I hit emotional bottom writing of somethings, and this is one. I close my eyes to ask the universe that this poem's words be universally sky written for it is a powerful message all mankind needs. Oh, how to spread some messages that are only exposed on Soup??? Poetry hugs ... CayCay

Oh I’m like that - there are definitely some topics I can’t approach because it’s too emotional and I feel that writing about it is all probability ultimately futile. (Sky writing’s a good plan though - or if I could just spread the feeling I had when writing it, maybe some people would finally get it) I definitely wouldn’t have braved writing this one without Carolyn’s prompt!

Your poetry appeals to me, Nina, and this one is no exception. Both the title and content make this a most worthy winner. Congratulations on placing first! Regards // paul

Your ink so inspiring! Yes there are still obstacles to overcome, especially in parts of the world where oppression is still practiced, but your words bring courage, congratulations on your victory!

Thank you very much Michelle! Wow I saw a woman talking on TV last night about her FGM and I was brought close to tears. There’s still a LONG way to go.

Congratulations on a first-place win in the Women's Day category of my contest, Nina. There were a couple other very good entries on this topic, but yours was the most "reader friendly" and clearly illustrated both the progress women have made and the terrible inequities that still exist, especially the brutal treatment that exists in some countries. You have a prize coming to you! Not sure what to send, so send me a Soup mail if you have a preference. Best wishes, Carolyn

More power to your pens and ink wells. There is still an unconscionable amount of cruel injustice to women across the world. May your words help diminish it. Well said, Nina.

Thank you very much Geoffrey! I hate to think how many millions of women suffer in silence. Chills me really. Thank you for your kind comments.

Thank you very much Nette, we all have battles to fight as women, but some have bigger battles than others... I’m proud of us all too!

A powerful write, Nina. As a woman, who understands that my country is not yet ready to have a woman at the helm, I appreciate your country, for you are at least more enlightened than the lot of us.

Well yes absolutely, and I grew up til I was mid-teens knowing no different than having a female PM. Next stop will be having one who hasn’t had to outman the men to get there and governs with a truly female perspective. Now THAT would be quite a thing.

Well written Nina, we're all equal as human beings but sadly some cultures are still stuck in the dark ages and their treatment of women is a disgrace to humanity. Tom.

Thank you Tom. I’d say equality is still a little way off here but we have nothing to complain about compared to some.
