Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held).  A song was created from her lyrics "Honeymoon Serenade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDWxc4cpHDc) and two movies have been made featuring the poetry of Andrea Dietrich: "A Tale of Fire and Ice" (a 4 min. Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. Perry, 2019) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7710360/

News on Connie's Memorial Service for Anyone Interested

Blog Posted:10/11/2022 3:52:00 PM

I just heard from Connie's daughter Jennifer. I had been wondering exactly how Connie died, and Jennifer said that Connie was on the phone with her dear stepson when he heard his mother say that she was having problem breathing. AT that moment the phone went silent, and they suppose the ending was painful but quick.

Now here is the message I just recieved from Jennifer regarding Connie's service, which is going to be very informal. Jennifer said it should be short and since Connie wanted something simple when she died, they are only going to say a few things, hear some of her poetry and her cremation remains will be put in the wall next to her beloved husband's remains.  I will copy/ paste it exactly as Jennifer's invitation to Connie's friends was given to me, so these are Jennifer's words. If anyone has any questions, I will try to answer you.here or in Soupmail.

"Here is a zoom link for moms quick service we are having.  October 20th at 2pm Hawaii time.

Jennifer is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

Dear Andrea: I missed this blog because the 20th October is my Birthday. How sad that Connie was buried on my Birthday. I was outraged to read that her Pacemaker was not being monitored correctly. Connie was so sweet and uncomplaining. I wonder why this wasn’t addressed during her hospital stay. ????? SuZ

My thoughts and prayers for Connie! She has written amazing poetry and has given me much encouragement over the years! Her death was sudden and unexpected! I missed the date because of my work commitments and would have liked to join on zoom. In this day and age no one should die because of a poor pacemaker. She probably had one that was not specific for her condition. All pacemakers get monitored regularly. It is sad this was not done. Jennifer, should ask questions and get the details so the same does not happen to someone else.

Thank you for informing us of this service, Andrea. It was sweet and meaningful. One of Connie's poems that was read is titled "Death" and my tears welled up throughout the reading. It is as though she wrote the poem for that very moment. Still hard to believe our dear Connie is gone.

Also, please thank Jennifer for making the service available on Zoom. That was an extra measure of kindness she went to and was much appreciated.

Thank you for the updates and info, Andrea. It would be lovely to attend her funeral through zoom, though I have no idea how it works. Perhaps my granddaughter could give me a helping hand! ~ The address you provided further down is the same as the one I have, so any mail should get there. ~ I hope that poetry book she planned on publishing will eventually see the light of day...

Thanks, Paul. I hope your granddaughter helps you figure it out. It feels scary to do it, and even though I use zoom for teaching, it's already set up for me, so I feel scared doing a "New meeting" on my own.
Date: 10/14/2022 10:19:00 AM
Thank you so much Andrea! You do so much for this website especially in keeping us informed! I look forward, if time permits, to joining this memorial. Connie was an extraordinary person in all facets of her life. I miss her friendship. She has left an indelible mark with so many that is a treasure. Blessings to you my friend.

Yes Sam, extraordinary people deserve extraordinary attention, which is why I have sponsored a contest for Connie and have informed people of her service. The same for Carolyn last year. I am so blessed to have known more than a few such extraordinary poetry souls in my lifetime.

Andrea, I appreciate all that you do. If there's an address I would love to send a card. Also I know I've seen Connie somewhere, and I can't picture a place where. Currently I live on Oahu, born and raised, in the 96734 zip code and work in the 96815 zip code and was curious if Connie is from these neighborhood areas.

Andrea, thank you for answering. From the address given we're about 25 miles apart. My curiosity has lessened. I was searching the net and came across a CMW quote-"The sun cannot set without a poem being born!" - Connie Marcum Wong ... and thought that would sell in a greeting card, picture frame, coffee cup,t-shirt. It would definitely be a keepsake that I would buy in honoring CMW passing.

I don't think anyone would mind if I gave this address. I do not know if Jennifer is living at the house but I am sure one of her daughters must be there. Maybe you could send just to "occupant?" Here is what I have: 92-1217 Uahanahi Street/ Kapolei, Hawaii 96707 USA
Date: 10/13/2022 9:15:00 AM
Thanks for letting us all know, my friend. I don't use Zoom and I'm not acquainted with it, but I will be there in spirit. Connie was a remarkable woman and someone I was proud to call a friend...may she rest in peace. I already miss her friendly smile!

I know how well she thought of you too, Emile and she was so excited that you were going to help her publish a book that looked similar to your style of book. She is such a special person. I hope Jennifer can publish that book for her!!

Hmm, maybe my time will be two hours earlier than yours then, like at 6. I will check and see. I wonder if we will be able to see all those in attendance on Zoom. It would be nice to see members show up. Thanks so much for your comment, and I hope to see you at the Memorial service. If you don't see me, it will be only because I did not figure it out.
Date: 10/12/2022 6:01:00 AM
I do not have Zoom, so I will not be present. I would suggest that someone might list the times (Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific) in addition to Hawaii time, so that folks can Zoom in at the correct time. I don't know what the equivalent of Hawaii time is here in Kentucky.

Milt, it's very easy to put Zoom on your computer. People can simply google what time their time zone is at when hawaii is at 2 p.m. I think for me, it's around 6 or 7, so I will have to check that out. For you it will be even later. I don't suppose many of our friends will be on Zoom since not many people use it, but maybe I will see a few there. Thanks for your comment. Yes, people need to check their time zones on Google.

Thanks for letting us all know, my friend - I don't have Zoom, but what a lovely idea for the family to invite Soupers in that way

Yes, it's a very innovative idea. Maybe it's the wave of the future. I hope I am able to figure it out that day!

Andrea I want to share this important news I received from Connie through Soup Mail on July 29th. She said that her Doctor told her they had inserted the wrong pacemaker in her. It was only working at 20% capacity. She said that before the surgery she asked them if it was the best one and they told her it was. She also said it was 19000 dollars and the Doctor told her to come back in two months to see if she needed a replacement. Can you believe this? You would think that if it is only working at 20% they would have gotten one to her ASAP. Thank you for sharing Andrea on Connies memorial service. I don't even know if Jennifer knows this took place please share with her this message. Thanks..

Someone mentioned this to me. Was it you? Yes, I will mention it to Jennifer. I would imagine her family already knows this. Our doctors today are a joke and I have no trust in the medical community although I know there are some good nurses and a few caring doctors out there. Wish I ever found one! Poor Connie. I sure do miss her.

I am so incompetent with zoom. I only use it for school, so I hope I can join the room for the Memorial service. It would be wonderful to see some of our Soup community there. Thanks, phyl.
