The Monster Says

My life is built on broken dreams,
On pain and rage and ghoulish screams,
On broken toys and mouldy cheese,
On popsicles that wouldn't freeze,
On babies' tears and dragon wings,
And other nasty, rotten things
That people fear but are my prize;
"You're mad!" you say, and close your eyes.
But there's no stopping me because
Monsters do as wicked does.
So kids, forget what Mommy said—
I'm hiding here beneath the bed
And when the lights go out tonight
I'll reach on up and take a bite
Or maybe I'll just take a taste;
Kiddies are too good to waste
On a single midnight snack.
I'll take a taste and then come back
On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday then,
On Thursday I'll come back again
To finish off my little treat;
First the head, and then the feet.
Horrid, yes, but tasty, too
And when I'm done, I'll come for you.
