When the word came through
the edges of the gold
blurred any firm line
imagined in the main country.

Governors set into the land,
a squatter looked out to selection,
to cut away the timber.
No holding him back.

But he could hear them at night
at fires in the gum wood,
he could see them in the day
in the shadow of the land.

But he could not go back,
no home to return to.
The only way open
was to lean to the gun.

The air came even and mild
and the bush gave way
with hardly a sigh
only a dream in a twilight of smoke.

Dear Mike - Could it be the displacement of the aborigines? I only know a wee bit about Australia. Banished prisoners, The Olympics and Steve Irwin, Kangaroos. love, Kathy
