My friends, love is better than anger.
Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better
than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful
and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.
                                                                     All my very best,
                                                                                 Jack Layton

(From Jack Layton's last letter to Canadian, written
                                                                                      on his death bed)

Jack the good heard Heaven’s summons,

Rose above the House of Commons,

Goons in suits evade and glower,

Knowing Stephen’s heading lower.

*Dedicated to Jack Layton (1950 – 2011)

About this Poem and Jack Layton

Jack was the leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada and many considered him the real “Mr Smith Goes to Washington.” He was a respected politician. He rode a bicycle, believed in the environment and had both integrity and charisma. He became the official leader for the opposition on May 18, 2011 and passed away from cancer August 22, 2011. Our prime minister, Stephen Harper, has made questionable decisions, including Toronto’s lockdown during the G20 summit. Hundreds of innocent people who were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time were locked in holding cells and subjected to brutality. Canada was in shock. We are NOT a police state…

I did not know the history of this man. But by his words I can tell he was a great man indeed. Thanks for sharing this.

Heyo Cyndi. Is this for Gwen and Andrea's contest? Are we allowed to use any rhyme scheme? I am going to double-check rules. Super dedication to Jack Layton here! Yeah, I think it's great. I voted NDP even though I knew the NeoCons had the game in the bag by splitting the Liberal/New Demo vote....playing the Lib/Demo voters against each other. I was gutted when Layton passed away so quickly. Jack Layton WAS the NDP -he was the real thing who cannot be replaced. His family values were too strong. R.I.P. Jack

I'm an NDP girl. Jack definitely WAS the NDP! And I wept when he died. His approach to politics changed my VIEW of politics, and when others got nasty, bared their fangs, he took the higher road. He kept it about the issues. I believed in him. I'm still a NDP girl... but I wonder what will happen to the party
