Battle Lines are Drawn

A hobby farm with a little orchard
And a cottage with a shed.
Blackberries tangle in the ti-tree
Which was once a garden bed.
Nestled down a peaceful street,
We moved onto our grange.
A fence lined marked the virgin scrub
Against the mountain range.

While we were snuggled up in bed,
With our world settled down,
The offerings of ‘easy pickings!’
Brought nocturnal life around.
We didn't mind the grass they ate…
Even scratching up our lawn.
But with the sight of ring barked trees…
The battle lines are drawn!

Flying low with clever stealth,
They flew in with morning dew,
Took to our ripe and ready fruit
In this orchard that we grew.
Scarecrows, nets and carbide guns,
Were message’s to warn,
Tomorrow we'll get serious…
The battle lines are drawn!

Wheat and pellets, roosts and nests,
The wire protects all that.
Too tired at night to realize
What the dog is barking at!
Broken eggs and feather beds,
So cunning prior to dawn.
When it comes back to kill again…
The battle lines are drawn!

Late summer and our earth is dry,
Gold has replaced the green,
The veggie garden’s locked away,
And the best it's ever been.
Overnight the mob moved in,
Ate our beans and peas and corn.
And trampled what they didn't eat…
The battle lines are drawn!

Every time we settled down,
And found our comfort zone,
Our enemies would calmly wait,
Their instinct is well known.
Frustration built inside us so,
With traps and trinkets, poison sprays,
We changed the face of paradise…
But only for a couple of days!
