A Day At The Races

Back in nineteen sixty seven when I was just thirteen
A group of us thought it would be fun to try and full fill a dream
We wanted a day at the races so decided that’s what we would do
So to Eyton on the Severn we set out, a real motley crew

Our bikes would be our transport on this beautiful summer’s day
Down country lanes across main roads the signposts showed the way
With lunches in our back packs and drinks along the road
We soon reached our destination took off our heavy load

The racing was not very grand just a local point to point
As a day out in the sunshine the races did not disappoint
We all had a six penny bet that’s all we had to spend
I think all these years’ later mines still rounding the home bend

The poor horse had three legs and a jockey who was blind
It must have been the case as the winning post he could not find
We sat on a blanket we stretched across the ground
Watching the races eating sandwiches was sound

We watched the jockeys mount their mighty looking steeds
Their silks were brightly coloured and brave their riding deeds
Jumping over fences sun light shining as the sped
The winners in the enclosure by the stable lads were led

We packed up all our rubbish at the end of this day of fun
On our bikes we cycled home still underneath the blazing sun
This day I will remember its imprinted upon my brain and heart
When a group of us went horse racing, I’m sure glad that I took part
