An Exercise in Writing Poetry

Blog Posted:5/11/2018 3:42:00 PM

Thought I'd throw something out for comment---tear it apart or think to yourself or comment thoughtfully. There is a new contest introduced by a new PM who FJ Thomas blessed with a PM. His name is Connor Lotts and he has a premium contest called Hotinashro and demands a write in a rhyme scheme of Aabccbddbeeb  Aabccbddbeeb aba. Eight syllables/line but you can get extra credit for writing in iambic tetrameter. (Any Subject) I will, of course, not enter this but let us take a look at the thought process written in iambic tetrameter.

When last the Autumn blanket crept

to seal the bed where Summer slept

its oak leaf fingers intertwined

and locked 'til springtime sets them free.

Now from the winter tempests flee,

the waning days and clinging time,

to loose its grip on solstace stare -

last glimmers in the sunset's glare.

The geese fly swiftly - cry in rhyme

as cold invades the season's tide,

within the ebb where instincts ride

on wings of life to warmer climes.

Verse one---let's talk--------------------------OK

Beautiful seasons poem, Craig: In time we all sleep under Autumn’s blanket. I imagine that -that is one avenue you could take this poem down. I will be interested to see it finished. Thanks for sharing a lovely piece. SuZ

I think what you wrote sounds great, why would you not enter the contest?

July, I understand what you mean. I used to enter every single contest but now I only enter ones that inspire me. Some days I like to just write for me and to try new things without being judged.

I've moved on from contests Constance but thank you and I must say, beyond it all, that you are, especially through facebook, such a sweet Gal to know.

Elegant poem, Craig...for purely me, writing in iambs works for synchronizing themes, (not possessing the skills of Shakespeare, Homer, Wordsworth & even sonnet masters here like dg,) & often improved by careful edits...whereas naratives & lyrics I enjoy leaving raw as possible, even sometimes difficult to read if the story is hard to digest, as I venture to let the reader see the world thru my obvious insanity!

I do like seasonal poetry and I do not see anything wrong with it. i think it's great to be honest, don't you? Reads as if it has been copied from a book. That's a compliment, in case you are wondering.

I understand. I guess i'm just not the fellow to critique another poet's thoughts. It is my belief that if a person is serious about poetry, like most of us here, if you write from the heart, spell correctly and use proper grammar, how could anyone criticize that? Poetry is so subjective when it comes to interpretation. Everyone has their own taste. we like what we like and dislike what we dislike, if that makes sense.

My friend Daniel----love your thoughts about your Mom---(inside stuff)----We are, all from a book, are we not---thank you---the hard part is being just a tad different from the rest and putting our star somewhere on the silly walk we stride upon---so much fun - so much pain - yet so worth it!

Don't get me wrong--I'm not here to trumpet my write but to discuss the evolution of a write.

Don't worry, I am not married to this nor should I be. This is to THINK about the process and we must always do that to perfect our craft. One of the issues most of us have is that once we write something, that's it and quite honestly that's stupid...unless it's an old love poem or whatever. Enough offered by me--let's talk.
