This morning I made myself my usual mug of coffee to entice my upper eyelids away from those comfy lower ones.
My coffee tasted so bitter, yet it was from the same jar of coffee as the day before. I added a little more sugar... still bitter. My next thought was the milk must be off, though it didn't taste sour...just bitter, and it smelled perfectly fine. But just in case, I made a fresh mug of coffee and opened a new bottle of milk. It had exactly the same bitter taste.
As the day progressed, everything I ate became increasingly bitter, even one of my favourite pasta dishes. By now my throat is feeling sore too and the glands in my neck are starting to feel tender. So I did what any self-respecting hypochondriac would do... I googled the words EVERYTHING TASTES BITTER.
Wow, the result certainly wasn't what I expected. I noticed that pine nuts came up in the tag words to a few articles. I don't usually buy pine nuts, but I bought some this week and ate quite a few yesterday. Intrigued I read on. It seems that the pine nuts are the cause of my bitter taste, which can develop the day after eating them and last for anything upto several weeks.
It seems that eating just one or two oxidised (rancid) nuts can cause this effect. Well, they are such little things, you eat 'em by the handful...don't ya ?
How on earth are you supposed to know if one of the little blighters is past its best ?
After a little more reading it seems that pine nuts from China are more likely to cause the problem. I bought mine from Tesco, a reputable supermarket, so I checked the packaging and guess what... they were Chinese pine nuts.
I also found out, from the internet, although it is not mentioned on the packaging, pine nuts oxidise very easily and should be kept refrigerated.
So, now I have days, maybe weeks, of not being able to enjoy my food or drink...even my wine
I won't be buying any in future, but if YOU do, remember
KEEP YER NUTS CHILLED
