Black and White

Blog Posted:3/22/2024 10:21:00 AM

When I post a contest, I think of a title to ponder and never (rarely) have an idea in mind of how I might write to it. This contest was no different, and after a couple weeks I regretted posting it because I was coming up empty other than snow and coal in my stocking, but then, I finally came up with one which, in the end, thanks to some inspirational writing by others, wouldn't have finished in the top half of my own contest but... What great writing by many of you. I'd like to give a special shout-out to the winner, the stand out winner. If it were the first lines of a book, it would be remembered like Gibson's "The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel", but this, "In the visiting room evening's ebony is shellacking everything." The poem OWNS this theme in nearly every line with no wasted words, just hard hitting creativity that you're sorry to see doesn't continue into a novel! The concise complexity of 2nd place leaves one feeling they've read much more because it does what poetry should do, create thoughts to ponder. 3rd place is a heartrending poignant and powerful reminder of neglected souls. I love all these because poetry should create questions within us and not black and whites, not stark answers but all the "in-betweens". The writes that simply played with the colors didn't hit enough on the creative edge I was looking for and some would have ranked higher if they had backed off some superfluous wording or over embellishments but, that said, I still praise the hard creative work of their composition - BRAVO!

Ah i think my theme was something you like and appreciate but the terms not so. Such as my opening stanza. True, i still do read psychology today. Its interesting to keep updated on recent work. Especially on IO psychology, too as thats my speciality. Thats a massive compliment tho, thank you so very much dear craigs! I appreciate you saying that. Truly. I cant wait for your blog. Always interesting to read your blogs. Grateful for your kindness

This raises curious thoughts (being an over thinker). Content specific, or otherwise, but more so if a write tends toward jargon, is it helpful, as you have done on some of your poems to prefix the write? I've got mixed emotions, might be an interesting ball/blog to kick around. BTW, your poem might be a valid publication in Psychology Today (I read the mag in college) - but, then, titled "Splitting"? I will blog on it - might be fun. Thanks

Hah awwn thank you so much, when i saw your contest i thought of “ truth” as a subject and then ofcourse couldnt help but raise awareness on bpd and splitting and i had to use a bit of dramatic metaphors to describe the severity of it altho i could and should have gone for something simpler. As silent one when he read my poem before i posted too pointed out that its a bit heavy maybe for a craigs contest , he asked “ are you sure you didnt have enough metaphors “ (sarcasm ofcourse haha) but i was too inspired altho i did try simplifying haha. When i read your blog and “ superfluous “ i laughed hah. Cus i knew. Thank you for the inspiration. Im grateful always

I digress - I'm wrong here, because this is a different type of write where the chaos plays to its purpose - I apologize and should have done my homework - wanted to say this before I have to run off to a dinner.

Impressive creation Inky & I know you must have worked hard on it - what a talent you have - yes, just me, but modifiers can act as speed bumps and spoil your flow. It's difficult for those who have a wonderful extensive vocabulary to refrain from using it. Hmm, I have an idea to see if it makes sense - by Monday - have a great weekend.
