Saluting some famous poets......

Phillis Wheatley


first published African-American woman poet, born in Gambia, Senegal. She was made a slave at age seven. She was purchased by the Wheatley family of Boston, who taught her to read and write, and helped encourage her poetry.

Her poem, On being brought from Africa to America" is my favourite and I'm sure all of you will equally enjoy it.



Twas mercy brought me from my Pagan land,
Taught my benighted soul to understand
That there's a God, that there's a Saviour too:
Once I redemption neither sought nor knew.
Some view our sable race with scornful eye,
"Their colour is a diabolic dye."
Remember, Christians, Negroes, black as Cain,
May be refin'd, and join th' angelic train.´

Tahera, Just wanted to say thanks for the comment on my blog. My oldest son Logan had a viral infection when he was 1 1/2, it was a stressful time for me, don't get discouraged it will go away...keep treating it and dont let you little one back down from it!! Best Wishes, Randa

Tahera, I first came across Wheatley when I was preparing for the English teaching certification exam in Florida. She's an extraordinary writer and her history is amazing as well. Just look at the words you have quoted from her here! She certainly deserves recognition. Thank you for giving it to her. Love, Carolyn

Her name sounds very familiar to me. She must have had great accomplishments in the world and had a most interesting life! I wonder how many books she had published!
