Why Do You Write

Blog Posted:12/19/2023 7:01:00 AM

This is why...my nephew sent this to me last night, he's 24

Mon 7:00
Hey! Hope you have been well. Miss you both tons. I just wanted to reach out and say I have absolutely loved the book of poetry over the passed year- much of your work has a profound impact on me; inspiring and eye opening to say the least. I absolutely love the metaphors, and even the depressing nature of some… a few of them put real life into a nice, hopeful yet saddening perspective at some points throughout read. Every once in a while I go back to some of my favorites - so far being “within a storm” and “my sister’s collage”. Thank you again for giving me this book and I will continue to enjoy it for a long time.

If words are able to touch a heart, the reason for writing becomes so much clearer. And, that's why I write. ~ Brandy

I write because it's a creative process, I have other creative hobbies that I'm much better at, but writing keeps my mind alive, and though I'm not that good it allows me to imagine, create, express

You're very good at writing Mr. Parker! Never let your pen dry!

There is no greater complement than an appreciative audience. I write chiefly for myself, but over the years had diverse reactions to poems (even those I personally whould not have rated as being outstanding). Our thoughts and words might just reach those who are in need of them at that junction of their own lives. Your blog touched a chord in me, Craig. As a Christmas gift, I have compiled a slim volume of poetry for my family, with special emphasis celebrating shared moments. My former husband had a stroke mid November and life is precious - he is not fairing well and I wanted to emphasis a life well lived, using poetry and photos. Our son and daughter are in the UK and the distance rubs.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment Su. We pray for the recovery of your former husband - don't know why it seems these events seem to happen close to the holidays so often but then perhaps they don't and its only because our emotions are keener and expectations so raw. Around 8 years ago my neighbor's (no longer my neighbor, because their life and livelihoods were devastated) daughter (only 23) was murdered; how do you write to them about that - I did, but some things are so close that you can't touch them, at least not that moment, but too powerful to ignore...hope all will be well as can be...

Tom, I deleted the whole blog. I wanted to simply address the form situation. Merry Christmas

I write because I found I must. But I published 8 160 page poem "personal anthologies" so that my grandchildren will know who their grandfather was and how he fits into their history and (partial) formation. They can always check into Amazon (cheap $8) to chase down my demons, desires, delights, and dedication to them and our extended family. :o)

how gratifying it must be to know how much your nephew appreciates your poetry, dear craig..i have a collection of my grandmother's diaries spanning the 70s/80s, and they make fascinating reading; they are among my most treasured possessions..why do we write? many reasons..writing has been my one constant in a life of inconstancy, a lifeline, it's more than a hobby for me..

That's awesome Charlotte! I just considered that he's my grand-nephew actually (my nephew's son). You're so lucky to have your grandmother's writings! It's easier here to find those that share our passion or inclination to write than those off-campus, and why it's rewarding to find those that do!

Beautiful thing to share Craig, I don't share my poetry frequently but it really touched me when one friend told me about a conversation with her husband where she was saying how much she missed me sending her my poems but didn't want to put any pressure on me if I'd stopped writing. I did a little live reading of my latest over a pint of Guinness and promised to resume sending them. It is a way of being truly seen x

DD, that's always lifting to hear and we often want to make sure we're not boring people with our drabble, or shall I say, hoping they don't view it as such. I think we also know over time, which type of poems they might like most.
Date: 12/19/2023 10:36:00 AM
So kind and insightful, this young nephew of yours Craig. So seldom do we see voiced appreciation (outside of the Soup). Those times that we do are very special and encouraging. :)

Thanks Deb, yes, although we write for ourselves, partially to release all those pent up thoughts rattling about within us, it's always special if someone takes even one of our writes to heart. When we leave this world, something will always be left behind more than memories and memories fade over time. Wish I had a book, or a journal written by a relative or other kindred spirit who has left us - it would spark their life anew - memories that will never be gone.
