BTW--If you haven't already, listen to more of Michael Feinstein's singing. It is some of the most expressive in contemporary music. Too many just sing the lyrics...he "feels" them. At the same time, he is not new, and has been around for many years.

The skating was beautiful and the song was touching, Craig, thank you for sharing:) The first time I have seen such a combination and I truly enjoyed every bit of it:)

Thanks Jo, yes, performance arts are rarely combined were they have equally shared value. It is a special interpretation when two artists don't overshadow each other but, instead, compliment each other. Yes, one could say that, "Haven't you seen Peggy Fleming skate to Clare de Lune?" Yes, I love that but the primary art is left to the skater or dancer or mimer and not to both. That is the difference here and I'd like to see more of it. It's very special when many arts can be effectively melted into one.

Interesting. The combination of art forms in the instance you show here, Craig, 'works', but such amalgams are rare. I have heard several spoken works marred by background music that was supposed to enhance the piece yet came across as intrusive.. I'm not a fan, for this reason, of Haibun. I find a change of form a distraction. Probably because I enjoy a steady flow from start to finish (getting increasingly difficult with age :) ), I am a huge fan of sonnets. We have a 26 letter alphabet and almost 750,000 words to play with, so simplicity should be the key. If you can move someone by saying 'I love you' without a marching band and a flypast by the Blue Angels, well- I rest my case.

Viv----always with entertaining and enlightening asides 8-)---BTW, I don't like Haibuns either for that exact reason.

maybe all the unused words and forms are a distraction from whatever they are trying to say and it's to cover up that there really is no point to the poem other than to say I've written a poem...the junkyard is filled with thousands of cars without engines...are they still cars or metal boxes sitting there to rust...for me I own quite a few of those boxes and yet have enough sense not to call them cars...same with poems, I've written hundreds of poems if not thousands and have written poetry only a handful of times...but to be fair a poet knows when he or she is reading poetry or a poem, problem is not all who write poems can write poetry...thus the quads and triples

Very metaphorically stated my poetic friend

This is also an excellent example of complex simplicity in that every layer is relatively simple, yet the words, if you were going through a break up, create complex questions and feelings....or even lamenting one. Also, artistically, I feel that skating has gone too far away from art and too much toward athletic. Much like poetry these days; do we have to do quads (words no one ever uses) and triples (a form no one ever can figure out) or can we use a perfect double jump like Brian does in this and leave the beauty to the heart and smile of the beholder-----all, have their merits and distractions I suppose. Personally, I like to be left thoughtful and not confused.

So many levels, like a layered cake of art---the melody, the lyrics (a poem), the artistic performance, and the athletic presentation. They affect all of us differently, in emotion and relevance, but we forget how many of all of these we feel exactly the same way. That is why, so often in our solitude, we are not truly alone.
