Hue

Don't use this word - I used to and will go back to try to remove if I can.  If you want to be original use the word "color" instead.  It's the most overused word used in those, including some of my past writings, who are trying to sound "poetic".  It totally fails now and is a cliche of words on steroids. When writing we must not sacrifice good poetry at the feet of  "poetic" demons.

interesting blog..i checked my poem 'recalling her' which deals a lot with colour and, sure enough, the dreaded word is there on line 7! lol but to my ear it's okay in that line, any other word just wouldn't sound right

Gotta love it, I probably shouldn't have been as direct but it wouldn't change the message that we, in an attempt to be original and poetic can often get caught up with words we never use in conversation. Yes, years ago "hue" was original just as "azure" was to blue. I'm simply saying (after reading 300 sonnets this week) that it seems hue is in every other one, so I also reevaluated my use of the word as well. It's much the same as using a cliche', words can have that same effect. As writers we strive to describe something in an original/unique/different way that sets each of us apart. If we all used the same things to accomplish that effort, we would be defeating that quest. I'm equally at fault and why I try to stay aware when I start to be mundane - which is often.

Great blog, Craig! Your being direct I believe, encouraged more discussion and so much so that Robert and I are actually conversing in rhyme!! You’re right about the mundane which would be worsened if one had to read 300 sonnets in one week! Phew!! Have a great weekend sans sonnets :))

I think we need to stop using the word “orange”. Now think about it before you come down too hard on Craig (or me). Hue is his “pet peeve” and Craig is a devoted and respected wordsmith so let’s respect that…he’s just looking out for us. So, let’s include “orange” as a word to omit. It doesn’t rhyme with anything and, quite frankly, it messes with my iambs… think about it.

I used ‘Door hinge’ once, and melted down my goldfish ‘for rings’ as rhymes for ‘orange in the past’ cheers David

Tell that to Crayola. I'll keep hue and orange in my vocabulary. Tonight's sunset reflected a deep orange hue on the lake.

"Of course the morning glow took on a gasping hue. For her bright gown and her kiss was longingly new. She that with soft twinkling eyes like fresh fallen dew. Shouted out, yes my dearest love, I love you too." RJL... Originality, message, purpose, imagery, romanticism and having experience in setting forth inner thoughts, deep inspiration and a meal of young love amidst the background of a life lived. What others may decry, shall not interfere with my purpose as a poet of 50 plus years. A true path must be faithfully followed.

true but sometimes the rhythm or the syllable count or rhyme scheme force me to use hue instead of color...good thing no one can sue poets for overusing a word but then repetitive refrains are part of poetry too... this is why I deliberately insert words I look up randomly just to see if they fit a certain theme and flow then most think I flew over the cuckoo's nest! thank goodness for the few who know what to do like you...oooops..I get carried away being too poetic sometimes too.. :))

What is a gal to do, when her name rhymes with hue, and poets are serving a brew? In words she becomes embrued…Jack sounds like the Sparrow dude, a freebooter thru and through…yet a hero to more than a few! Tis too easy to misconstrue, and lawyers just add to the stew, so I’d rather just pay them adieus :))

Hi Susan. "Jack searched abroad for a large villianous crew. Those downtrodden but sure to wear a criminal shoe. Well trained to work after midnight two by two. Steal the treasure be gone before morning's first dew. Sell the stolen goods before end of the day too. Paint the town awesome red but never overdue. Await sunset to rise to break in a store new. If ever accused of such crimes quite happily sue."

I'm always rather put off by people who tell me NOT to use particular words. Words are to be used! I'm a poet, unrestrained by the various rules and regulations that crowd our creativity. If the occasion calls for "hue," I think I'll use it despite your directive, okay?

If you're stuck for a word that rhymes with blue and you don't know what to do, here's a clue. It's perfectly fine if you resign yourself to use the word, 'hue.'
