Heroes

Blog Posted:2/26/2020 1:25:00 PM

Just thinking, (don't know quite why but nothing new there), about heroes. I'm looking forward to watching a movie tonight about someone I read a book about many years ago who I've always respected as a true hero, not heroine, because heros have no gender, they have heart and courage and honor. Her name was Araminta Ross, better known as Harriet Tubman. Whenever I get down about things I think of her; whenever I think something too difficult to do, I think of her; whenever anything stands in my way, I recall her life and everything seems so insignificant in that light...courage and commitment aquire a new level of meaning and repect and I'm thankful for her inspiration.

I admire many, but only one TRUE hero, my dad.

I'm sure he is honored and worthy Greg, you're lucky to have shared this life with him for so many years - I envy you (in a very good way) because my Dad passed at 42 when I was 19...We often learn too late not to take anything for granted.

Growing up my heroes were all of the men who fought in WWII. Common men like you and me who fought for a belief and a way of life. Men who gave their lives for strangers, liberating millions of oppressed people. Their selfless sacrifice from which we are all still benefiting from today. These days as America tries to erase and rewrite history, I pray their sacrifice is never forgotten.

With an oak tree branch as rifles and was always celebrated who could "Die" the best---then way too many (one is too many) found that dying is no game in this mixed up world.

As a boy we played "war" with sticks for guns and horse biscuits for hand grenades not much else to do living in the country except pretend.

For me it is Helen Keller. Thinking of her brings me out of any negative spin threatening my outlook. I hope everyone has a Harriet or Helen to invite to any pity party they may be holding! Thanks for the share ...CayCay ( heroe - Harriet - Helen, hmmm)

So true CayCay--and Anne Sullivan must be included with Helen.

Craig, for my hero, again (from the Bible,)would be Barnabas,(son of encouragement),such folk like him are the fertilizer to the flowers that beautify our daily existence, there have been many (of both sexes) here at PS over the years as I'm sure we both could testify.Happy days.

Yes Brian, and we know how dangerous it was to be a religious activist in Roman times--but then some things never change, especially in the Middle East.

To me a hero would never show signs of fear or being scared. Standing at 5 feet tall, and having lead many missions (around 10) to free slaves, with a $40, 000. 00 bounty on her head (keep in mind what that amount of money represented in those days) she continued her rescue along the underground railroad-undettered. She was quoted as saying she brought every passenger back and not once did she crash. From what I see she was very brave, inspiring and courageous women.

It's amazing what she accomplished - courage, perseverance, passion, and determination.

I know she's from the bible Brian which does not change my comment to you nor its pertinence --"Interesting, provocative and inspirational choice, especially from a time and place where woman weren't respected or expected to be "strong" enough to be leaders but as history has shown us there is no predetermined visage of who we should celebrate. Great choice. I do know the reference ironically or otherwise related to Barak of the day--Deborah was an inspirational leader in biblical times or any time for that matter.

They say the definition of bravery is being scared and going in anyway, I think this woman definitely qualifies.

Lincoln and my stepbrother Dale, who died in his early 30's so many years ago, are my biggest heroes. Dale was the only man I personally knew in my youth with such great integrity. Harriet Tubman is a great example of heroism. I have seen at least two movies about her now. the most recent one came out not too long ago.

Craig, there are many heroes out there. The heroes in my life, are my parents. Both inspire me, in so many amazing ways. They are always helping someone in need. I find myself acting the same way. Many come to them and share their problems, mom and dad are always listening. Always doing work for the Lord. I love them both very much. I will always be, my dad's potato chip grabber. Mom's best friend. :) Brandy
