A Thousand Words

Blog Posted:2/1/2019 4:03:00 PM

A statement attibuted to Napolean says "Un bon croquis vaut mieux qu'un long discours" (A good sketch is better than a long speech), or as we are more accustomed to hearing it "A picture is worth a thousand words".  I pray to argue the issue because like most conundrums we need "what ifs" we need "relativity". Whose picture and whose words are we comparing and what is the complexity, or lack of, within the subject. I think the premise, which has existed for generations undervalues words. I might say that a picture is worth a thousand words but a poem is worth ten thousand thoughts...therefore worth ten times the picture. I will leave it to you poets to elaborate on.

"A picture is worth a thousand words". I agree with most of what has been already said. Yet, I can also view this statement from a different angle. Were we all to look at the same picture, each of us could write a different poem according to how it inspires us. Thus a picture would have inspired a thousand words, or more! On the other hand, taken literally, I could say a picture is worth just a few words: exp The Napalm girl ~ 'the naked truth...a testimony of terror'.

I read Heather's poem, and this is the comment I left: "This is beautiful, Heather! Had you taken a photo of your child playing, it would have never produced the same expressive and emotional feelings which you projected through these words. I have read it once...twice, just for the sheer pleasure of savoring it; the taste lingers on."

Thank you Paul, yet if we are to shrink to the lowest denominator, if I may, allow me to lead you to a Heather Ober poem "Puzzle Piece" please read and express what picture might say more? We underestimate our power of words as poets/writers and truly believe we are of equal value creatively.

I think it can go either way, and is never constant ... a picture, (photo OR painting), can have many layers, or just one, and a poem can have a single, simple message, or be layered like a onion in ambiguity and hidden meaning. Then again, depending on the person viewing or reading, their imagination may make far more out of the subject or verse than is there or intended, or may simplify it. I guess I'd have to surmise that it's a VERY fluid thing, and that most such "sayings", for me, are much too opinion-driven and restrictive. Let it take you where it takes you, a thousand words or one! ;-) (In my very humble and odd opinion)

Indeed Greg, it is a moving target and centuries ago when the thought was alluded to the dynamics were different, yet I would contend that both meant more without other media as competition, so I retreat to the relativity of what picture versus what write---both have merit to discover.

I suppose it all depends on who the artist is...

It does Daniel, and there lies the issue with any statement being excepted "as is"

Well my take on it is some poems are so convoluted, ambiguous and esoteric that I am no more informed or inspired or enriched by their reading. However, some pictures, e.g. like the one of Phan Phuc, a 9 year old naked Vietnamese girl in 1972 running from her village that was just napalmed speaks volumes about war, collateral damage, human suffering and political and ideological cost. That picture impacted and conveyed more to me than any written discourse. Both pictures and poetry share a great gift to us all.

Well said Keith, anyone who doesn't know that photo like many others that burn in our memories, has not lived, yet that brings to the fore the relativity of what picture to what poem or prose as Frederic alludes.

I'll say this...a picture is constant, its shades and colors never change, its beauty is at its highest when first looked upon, then never gets any higher...a poem changes with each reading as it touches different emotions or thoughts... as the reader's world changes the understanding of a poem changes and its beauty evolves to even greater heights...the eyes see a picture, the mind sees a poem and in doing creates a new world one a picture cannot...just a thought

Frederic, these thoughts you have shared is why your writes will touch thousands of thoughts for many years. Exactly - I suppose one may inspire more variance of thought from an abstract, but then it becomes more like a poem than a picture?
