I am Robert James Liguori.  I have authored several technical books including The Java Pocket Guide.  I have spent twenty years in the aviation community doing software development and testing.  Currently, I'm spending my time writing poetry trying to make a small, yet positive difference in this world... one word at a time.

So... I'm running the Fantastic Four poetry contest... and it's going slow... but that doesn't bother me too much... but what does bother me is 1/3 of my entries have absolutely nothing to do with the Fantastic Four.  What is wrong with people?  The instructions couldn't be any more simpler, just write a poem about the Fantastic Four and submit it.  Well, anyways that's my venting for now... I look forward to more entries before the end date that are on topic!

Lol. My contest contained this quote "No annoying rules," and filled up rather quickly despite the difficult theme. Something to think about folks. K.I.S.S.

Okay, that said, Robert's contest is simpler than your contest was Poe/Plath. He's simply asking for it to be about the Fantastic Four which is much less complex than Poe in the style of Plath and if someone submits a poem about Huey, Dewy, and Louie it's a problem. There are more than enough simple contests here to occupy those who like them. Contests filling up fast is a goal? NOT? I'd rather get 3 excellent entries than 35 average entries. Something to think about - lower expectations produces lower achievement - there's plenty of opportunity for both here, so if you don't like the rules or the judge move on - SIMPLE! If you write to a contest, follow the rules - SIMPLE! Keep. It. Grown. Up.

I'm being quite serious. Peer sponsored contests are problematic, on many levels. I won't go over the same things I've mentioned on many occasions in my different incarnations here. But here's some simple advice for all sponsors: Keep it simple. Don't take yourself too seriously. Let everyone have a good time. Comment on every entry and thank the entrant for their time and effort

Are you saying Tom that we should keep things simple, and that Robert's rules are too demanding? Or is this totally tongue in cheek? (I hope)

I had the same experience, Robert. There are at least a few who make the effort to read the instructions and those poets make it worthwhile. Otherwise it would be disheartening. I miss the good old days (10 years ago) when contests were well supported and the sponsors had their work cut out to select the top ten winners. Oh, and I miss PD (Linda) who regularly livened up blogs by putting the cat amongst the pigeons.

Respectfully not true - 10 years ago 2013 PD and others were hosting contests and awarding wins to 3/4 of the entrants. I complained that there should be true contests with only 10 ranked winners at most so Team Poetry Soup relented and instituted the premier contests in 2016. PD prior to that would sometimes fill and close 3 contests within a week - I never miss that though it is what it was. Cat among the pigeons is, however, accurate.
