LET’S PLAY! PICTURE PROMPTS FOR WORD PAIRINGS! ;)
Some time ago, I blogged about uncommon word pairings and how these pairings can breathe life into a stale poem and—since that blog was such a hit—I thought we could play with some images and word pairings again.
Quick refresher:
Word pairings are made with:
1) a noun and a verb
2) an adjective and a noun
3) an adverb and a verb
(though all writers are advised by those-in-the-know to be cautious of overusing adverbs and are often told to avoid adverbs all together, I have noticed that one or two adverbs in a poem when used for uncommon pairing, can “set-off” a verb, change its context?)
Example: Red font shows uncommon word pairings.
Kite Festival
by Michelle Brown
As the sun cauterized, the kites began their crumpled descent
from dragon to dithering rat, snaking at the ankles
of toddlers. Why now, from the balcony of another city,
am I thinking of you: diseased language,
that spit and crackled at me on the train. Men,
and women becoming men, thrummed
like light passing through a subway, picking up clicks
and swoops and flashes, where I was posed,
permanently, as a woman abroad. From my pilgrim’s lookout
I could watch how the wind jimmied
the remainders. Rustled the tarps. The only kite master still on the field
kicked at the falling animals, collected their strings, mourned
their ghosts. Only the lucky ones
catch a break of wind.
(this is an excerpt, only, posted here for study purposes only. If you’d like to read the rest of this poem, please use the link I’ve supplied below the poem. It was published in the Puritan, an excellent on-line poetry journal.)

sooooooo...
Here are some picture prompts:
What can you see in these pictures? Can you compare one of the images to something else? If it is something you have heard before, if it sounds familiar, then it is not uncommon.
1 -- city scene

2-- desert scene

Look at number two... desert scene, now look at these pictures... do you see the imagery?

EVEN :

3) Homeless

4) Abandoned farmhouse

5) Garden Party

6) Breakfast at Tiffanys

7 Country Road

Pick one, two, all.. what can you see?
Example the last one, for me, country road? I see
licorice meanders through avocado stubble
NOW TAG, YOU'RE IT!!!
