I was born under the star sign 'Pisces' and as the saying goes "You can't get over that". I have life-long interests in water, fish, the sea, sailing and everything wet and aquatic. I have a scientific background in the environment and fisheries. I have written extensively on many topics. I have created and manage a gaggle of websites. I have now retired and live in the 'Shark Shack' by the sea near Jervis Bay, on the South Eastern coast of Australia. I sail, fish, walk, dive and swim as much as I can with the motto: 'Diving for Pearls'. My main focus is on didactic poems. I love the poems of Dylan Thomas and my favorite movie is 'Under Milk Wood' (a radio play, made into a film). I also like Les Murray. My website is Poetry Community http://www.poetrycommunity.com.  Cheers!

Thoughts on Contemporary Poetry, Free Verse Debate

Blog Posted:5/25/2017 4:18:00 PM

The current "Contemporary Poetry" Contest sponsored by Cecelia Hopkins-Drewer raises many issues that many people think about. Below are some thoughts on the topic.

=> I once left a poetry site because my poems were deleted without notice by the editor who claimed they were not 'poetry'.

Steven Fry wrote 'The Ode Less Travelled' a 'how to guide' for people to learn the discipline of writing traditional 'metered' poems ('iambic'), but strangely none of his poems are published - for him poetry is a private act for his own private pleasure: 'I do not write poetry for publication'.

[Surely this is the weakness of his argument - as most people write poetry to be read by others or shared]. The book is a great read and he has a wonderful undertanding of poetry.

Stephen Fry advocates structure, technique and rhythm in poetry

[ his book teaches it with many exercises mostly about rhythm and meter ]

Quotes - "Learning the lingo is the begining of our rite of passage. Talent is inborn but technique is learned. Talent without technique is like an engine without a steering wheel, gear or brakes."

Quotes from W.H. Auden

The poet who writes "free" verse is like Robinson Crusoe on his desert island: he must do all his cooking, laundry and darning for himself. In a few exceptional cases, this manly independence produces something original and impressive, but more often the result is squalor — dirty sheets on the unmade bed and empty bottles on the unswept floor.

A poet is, before anything else, a person who is passionately in love with language.

A craftsman knows in advance what the finished result will be, while the artist knows only what it will be when he has finished it.

But it is unbecoming in an artist to talk about inspiration; that is the reader's business.

[Is poetry an art or craft? How much does technque, structure, form or tools matter?]

I am glad my contest got you thinking (in a good way) John. Someone mailed me and said I had omitted one catergory "from the heart". They were correct, all poetry should come from the heart! My aim was actually to promote acceptance of many styles. I can appreciate poems which are very different from my own when they are written by other people. In fact, if they wrote the same as I did - there would be no point.

Ha, that quote from Auden was sure funny. I think it depends on the poet. I have seen a few very incredible free verse poets here at Soup, but for me they are not too many. I see a lot of great rhyming poets. I think rhyme is just naturally easier; but it too requires some talent. To each his own , but people who say they are writing for just themselves, what are they doing on the internet then?

I believe it is both, but as Cyndi says below, if it lacks passion, heart, emotion etc, like any other art it will fall into the "who gives a crap" junk yard of forgettables. I don't think, like figure skaters, we should as poets be measured by how many "quads" we can complete, but by how the total performance leaves the reader even if it takes them till next week to figure (no pun) it out. I have been (no secret) a supporter of proper form when used correctly but they left compulsory figures back in Dorothy Hamel's time for good reason - if needed, they will do them on the ice, where they do the most good and are truly appreciated.

I see poetry as literary art that is crafted... so both? A sculptor who works with bronze will craft his work into art. I see poetry the same way... and like all art, technique and structure and form are nothing if the piece lacks passion, heart, emotion. I prefer language and content over rhyme and meter, so I love free verse, but to each his own. Craft, to me, is the act of creating art... the work that goes on behind the scenes. I don't write for contests anymore, but I'll have to at least read up on the contemporary contest.

Words are the tools, jangling thoughts in reader and writer. "Mister Joe's charms jangles the minds of his readers His words cast nets to trawl up memories and concepts, lured within the reader's mind with word play and twists. Seas of dreams and memories are netted, prodded and poked To yield twinkles, sparkles, hums, grunts, and nods of appreciation and delight. His jangles finding meaning and echoes with links and associations, never before conceived nor considered."
