Frost bitten

As an englishwoman, when I was at school - all those many moons ago - I was taught the works of Shakespeare, Wordsworth, Keats, Masefield and so on and was never introduced to the poetry of American poets or those from other parts of the world.

I was having a meal out tonight with a very close friend who has been so supportive of my work and we were discussing our favourite poets/poems when she mentioned 'The Vale' by Robert Frost - a well known American Poet.  I must admit I was ignorant of Mr Frost and his work and made it my mission on returning home to look him up on 'google' and was surprised and delighted by the poetry I was reading - what an accomplished and erradite poet Robert Frost was. I can sincerely say that I have been well and truly 'Frost' bitten and 'The Vale' will now go into my list of favourites too.

On reading Deborah Guzzi's blog tonight about Beatrix Potter - one of Englands most famous author's - I noticed that some soupers didn't know of her work, again, probably because they were never introduced during school years or because they have so many well known and famous authors in their own parts of the world, others fall by the wayside.

It seems such a shame that we can tend to concentrate on 'home grown' authors and poets rather than extend our knowledge of other countries writers.

I feel that as I writer, I can only grow by reading from the vast material that is out there in the world and I am now going to make a point of looking up famous writers from other countries to broaden my horizons.

Frost is an amazing poet who will always be one of my favorites! The number one spot is taken, of course, by Edgar Allan Poe! He is the one that made me want to start writing and exploring the poetry world!~Tirzah~

Nice blog, Janette. I am glad you finally discovered the awesome poet Frost. I did all my studies many moons ago in high school and college,a time when I read many famous novelists and poets, so I can not really place names with favorite poems after all those years, but i know I USED to know a lot. haha.I can't even seem to recall anthors i learned about a few years ago.(I just now posted a poem about Ms Potter, who I actually DID know about). Nowadays I am happy just to read the modern poets that are part of poetrysoup. There are too many amazing poets right under our very noses whose works will never see the light of a bookstore! Kudos Janette a great point both u and Debbie have made today to enlighten and broaden our scope of knowledge... a wonderful blog my friend.. with luv from the "Sweetheart" ... AlohA... I also wrote a children's book entitle "Children's Charms" in our local libraries in the tri state area where I reside... luv..

Frost achieved fame for good reason, Janette, and his poems are required reading for US school children. Glad you are enjoying his art! If you haven't read Emily Dickinson or Edwin Arlington Robinson, I highly recomment them. Two of my faves! Love, Carolyn

Robert Frost has long been one of my favorite poets. You will enjoy. I am afraid I have been more familar with Beatrix Potter pottery than with her poetry. I shall enjoy reading her also. Love, Joyce
