A 'Twisted' Sense of Pride

This June, our national football team
Is going to South Africa, for the World Cup
When we were told not to wear our team colours
I thought, ‘This country has gone bottom up!’

Since when did our nation get twisted
Into a totalitarian state?
Where certain minorities have their say
Fuelling the ‘BNP’s’ fires of hate

They wouldn’t have even dare to constrain
The Welsh, the Irish or Scots
Who if told not to wear their teams colours
Would rather be hung, drawn, quartered or shot

Their sense of pride in their history
And for their Countries, is world renowned,
For England to bow to the vociferous few
Would be letting the team in South Africa down

Not to mention our troops in Afghanistan
Fighting terror so we can live free
Nailing their colours to the mast
Standing proud in the fight for their country

We here in England must echo that pride
As onwards all ‘our boys’ forge
And I for one, will be flying my flag
For Queen, Country, ‘boys’ and Saint George.

Janette, is this an entry in that contest about AFrica? I know VERY little of team sports or of the World Cup, but how else can one play without wearing colors!! To at least distinguish the teams, for heaven sakes!!! I just now saw that you had commented to my flower blog about being a carnation. Nice choice. Thanks for your comment and I enjoyed this poem..LUv, Andrea

Very nicely penned Janette. Terrific rhyme and meter, but, more importantly, what a fantastic message with pride and loyalty shouting through. Absolutely ridiculous some of the compromises free people are now expected to make the world over. Makes you wonder, if indeed, we are free. I love this poem and this stand you have taken. Joe

Being a South African myself and hearing the warnings being echoed bout our country and hosting the World Cup sometimes take me aback.. For instance when the rugby WC was hosted by SA not a 2nd thought was raised wrt fans and their dress codes. So I absolutely understand where you coming from with this poem.. Thought provoking and taking a stand.. I love it. ~rgds Wilma

It's not just Ancestoral English who will be supporting England. Third or more generation families form all corners of the world will be supporting them. This country and i do mean the UK, and in particular the English media seem to create these situations which may encourage or incite. The government has to clam them, that's if they have the GUTS to do so. Wonderful message in your poetry Janette. It's the morons in the shirts who cause the trouble >> James
